where can one find stats on how many pedestrians are hurt/killed in accidents versus vehicle accidents. Jaywalking is a crime and was still in play in the 80's with a fine of R25 for getting caught.

There has been report of people being fined for Jay Walking in Nelspruit! :p

Not sure on the stats, maybe one of the goverment site (road) or even Stats SA or the AA. :)

why is it that drivers must read through a book on road signs and do's and don'ts yet a pedestrian can willy nilly cross a road as if they have right of way. they should also have a book to read that warns them of the dangers of not following rules of the road.

Don't drink and walk! Argh, I hate those.
And wear white clothes to be more visible at night.

ha ha like we not allowed to drive on the pavements they should not be allowed to walk in the roads.

oh but it is, in the middle 80's they were ticketing people in cape town for jaywalking and the fine was R25 or there abouts.

I unfortunately don't have stats, but I remember reading stats that showed that about half of road accident fatalities in South Africa were pedestrians.

Natural selection. Allowing jaywalking is a good way to figure out who lacks basic co-ordinationor intelligence . Works best if everyone has nice solid metal on the front of their car.

Jaywalking should be mandatory.

Well I still do the occasional jay walking, and never knew that it was a crime.
It's stupid that it is. Fortunately I've never known it to be enforced in South Africa.

ha ha or a scoop like a snow plough and as they get hit the scoop throws the blabbering idiot back on the pavement.

it was enforced in 1985 in cape town.

Using this thread to post this video i recorded last night.
Passengers were trying to touch each others hands between two cars and then one driver lost control.
Nearly hit a car head on!

This happened in Claremont last night.
