Glad to be of service. If you'd like an operating system that's much easier to customise (at the expense of a little time hacking at some workarounds), I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 and have pretty much everything working.

How was their stock situation? Everyone wants me to get them one tomorrow, LOL!

Even my mom :D
 
Oh, and used my AAO today at Melrose Arch and at OR Thambo on their respective wifi hotspots... Bliss!

Although I will say that Ubuntu takes about 30 seconds to start up, while my gf's AAO still running the default Linpus boots in 10 seconds flat.
 
I was there at 9AM this morning (yeah, the wifey wanted one too)... The salesman said they had about 50 left - special price expires at 14H00 today.
 
Stocks were OK-ish when I left the store yesterday at 16h00. Only had blue & white ones, we picked a blue one as I think the white would quickly show marks etc.

Funny the store had so many wrongly marked items on the shelves. For instance the white ones were marked R1999 whilst the blue ones were marked R2999, identical specs just different colours. Only after the salesman had to make several enquiries did he establish that indeed we can have a blue one at R1999. Guess a new store would still have some teeting problems.

Apologies if this is off-topic but they also had a Samsung Color Laserjet printer for R999. Is this worth buying? Shall I trek back to Wierda Park quickly before 14h00?

You don't pay for beta's. Mine sleeps and works just fine so maybe your setup is wrong.

It's a netbook, how can it be setup wrong? :confused:
Windows 7 is not meant for netbooks AFAIK, maybe the final will have better support.

Sometimes the problem is Windows not the other way around.

I would pass - the printer may have a good price, but have you looked at what new toner would run you?
 
Just returned from IC, The Mall @ Reds. Got what I was told was the last 3, and the last few Alto Connect notebook stands.

Almost had to fight people off for them! Sheesh!

They sold the white display unit while I was paying.
 
And they were sold out of white ones on Friday already; I asked him to check and double check a few times, because we actually wanted white ones to begin with.

In retrospect, however, I prefer the blue :D
 
Im *ecstatic* about mine. Have a 15" MBP, but already see the advantages of having an AAO (like bwana does too, I assume).

Actually bought an HP Mini 2140 a few aweeks ago for RK4,5 - returned it after 1 day (that's a whole new chapter though, as the store manager @ Dion Wired 4Ways and I had a HUGE disagreement about what their written return guarantee promised), as I thought it was a bit much for what I was getting.

I intend to mod the crap out of the AAO - bluetooth being 1 on the list.

I know its a beta. That's why I put up with it. Perhaps its my Mac background but having to worry about my "setup" being wrong is foreign to me. :)

I did check the prices of the cartridges, they are R600 each (there are four - black, cyan, yellow, magenta)

Unfortunately I do not know enough about printing to determine total lifecycle costing to make an informed decision. It just sounded good, being a grand for a color laser...

Well its too late now anyway :) And I have 200 CD's to rip - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Their staff are not the most clued up I have come across. They had whites in stock on Sat afternoon.

We also got a blue, I think you made a wise choice!

About printing, have a look at the HP laser printers. Got my girlfriend the HP 1018 back when she was in varsity. It's still going strong, and hasn't cost more than R500 in toner. And that's fairly heavy printing for 3 years, and light printing since then. Then again, if you have an account with a dealer, you can get great prices on consumables.
 
OK, I've tried Ubuntu 9.04 NBR - it feels positively slow compared to Linpus, and wireless networing only worked on the first boot after installing NBR, and never again after that. Back to Linpus - it seems to be doing all I need this little machine to do - just need to follow up on a few codecs for the different media types I'm throwing at it.

Wait!

There are a few silly things that happen with your wireless!

I'm running 8.10 flawlessly (as far as I can see). Right down to using my SE UIQ 3.0 phone as a 3G modem. Didn't even need to hack anything to get that right!

Check your file at /etc/network/interfaces

Make sure that your wireless device (likely ath0) isn't auto.

If you decide to give it a go, let me know, I'll give you full instructions.

btw guys, my mom LOVES hers :D
 
Oh crud!!! I've already restored Linpus... I may feel adventurous enough to try NBR again tomorrow - would you be so kind as to post the instructions anyway? I'm a total Linux noob.
