Acer hits out at Vista operating system

The head of Taiwan-based personal computer maker Acer, Gianfranco Lanci, hit out at Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, saying that the "entire industry" was disappointed by it.

"The entire industry is disappointed by Windows Vista," the head of the world's fourth-biggest PC maker told the Financial Times Deutschland in its online edition on Monday.

Never before had a new version of Windows done so little to boost PC sales.

"And that's not going to change in the second half of this year," Lanci said.

"I really don't think that someone has bought a new PC specifically for Vista," he added.

Microsoft's operating system commands a market share of around 90 percent, with Apple and Linux accounting for the rest.

While the industry had waited for years for Vista, the software was not really ready when it was launched to great pomp at the start of this year, Lanci complained.

"Stability is certainly a problem," he said.

Acer, with annual sales of 11.3 billion dollars (8.2 billion euros), ranks number four in the PC market behind Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Lenovo.

But why am I not surprised?

I'd like to see what the Vista fanbois have to say about this.

Did you read before you pasted it, they are lashing out not because it is bad doesn't work, or causes issues, but because it's not boosting pc sales enough to Acers liking.

they are complaining because consumers are not being forced to go and buy new pc's to run Vista... I would have thought you Vista nay sayers would think thats a *good* thing, why not just ad "I hate M$" to your sig and call it a day.

Not quite. What they are saying is that there is no overwhelming urge to own Vista, and people aren't upgrading their pcs specifically so that they can run Vista as an OS.

I'm running Vista, I'm starting to think I'm either very lucky, or its a case of vista "fanbois" (people who actually use the OS) vs MS haters (who more likely don't use the OS), and guess who knows more about it? oh.. the answer is the haters btw, much more apparently.

It wasn't a mess for me, pretty much the same as XP in terms of stability, I just haven't had any big problems besides not having drivers for my sound card.

same. I had Vista running on my machine and it just had too many issues with all my applications.

I run it at work... has its moments where it drives me mad... but all in all, lot like XP for me since I abuse Operating Systems and make them do things they're not really supposed to do....

I took Vista off my 1 year old Acer laptop last week. Just was WAY too slow even though it passed all the various tests and recommendations. XP is much, much, much faster!

I run Vista on a new HP Pavilion, a 2 year Old Acer, a Gaming Machine (Core 2 Duo 3.2ghz, ATI CrossFire 512mb, 2GB Memory) and two old machines my children use (celerons, with 1gb Memory each).

I have very few problems, performance is good even on the old laptop, it's stable and the parental control features are really usefull for my kids pc's, and thats just at home, my office runs then on a variety of machines with a variety of uses, it's generally as stable if not more so than XP was, yes it uses more resources, but it also manages them better, i.e. it will use all the memory on a 1gb machine, but that's beacuase it manages memory allocation to applications as an OS should, making applications more responsive.

So what experience do you have with vista that you can so convincingly claim that its cr@p.

Same here EHV you rock little bro

I had XP since the first release without SP1, I stuck with it and fixed the issues as they came up. I went through SP1, slipstreamed my disc, went through the whole thing again and that repeated for SP2, which was really the most impressive service pack I have worked with in any software.

Saying that, I'm doing the same with Vista. I feel bad for not trying the RC builds, but hey, I don't have an extra hdd.

I'm living with Vista, with all it's issues and I love sorting out the small problems it has, which btw. most online folk are happy to help with. I can't wait for SP1 and I hope it is like Xp's SP2

Bought a Notebook recently with Vista Business.
You will need at least 2Gb of Ram to run it successfully on a Notebook.
As the notebook is for my wife who is barely comfortable with XP, I took it off and replaced it with XP for simplicity sake.

Not to say I won't put Vista on again, but not at the moment.

Perhaps Mecer and the Company I bought the Notebook from should put XP and Vista on as a dual choice for their customers?
You can legally downgrade Vista Business to XP, so I can't see why the Manufacturers cant give their customers the option on first boot and installation for both operating systems.
Edit: It will also save the customer time and effort having to download the several hundred Megs of drivers and software for XP at South African bandwidth prices.

I have serious misgivings about any operating system being defective by design, swallowing needless processor cycles for something that doesn't even benefit me as a user.

You live in S.A they are the law was passed a year or so ago, that's why it's illegal in this country to use encryption.

I bought a new laptop a few months ago with Vista on it, luckily I went for Vista Business (which includes a XP Pro license) and although I liked Vista (especially the Search function!), I downgraded to XP Pro a few weeks later simply because I had a few fav applications that didn't run on Vista.

However, this is not a Vista problem but a vendor problem because they haven't released versions that were compatible with Vista (yet). Same with printer drivers. I didn't feel like waiting. I'll wait until Vista SP1 is released and then decide whether I want to upgrade again. However... XP is flying on the new laptop and everything works 100% so at this point in time, upgrading to Vista will purely be for novelty sake.

For the more mundane things like stability and ease of use, I'd agree.

However, for the more malicious aspects of it, such as the DRM, I'm perfectly capable of judging it. One doesn't have to be a murderer to know that murder is wrong.
