Activate new iPhone 5

My iPhone 5 arrived today, so I took out my old Sim and cut it into a nano sim using templates online.

When I start phone I get 3G and cell bars, connect to wifi, try to activate, says activation server cannot be reached.

Tried 3G
Tried work wifi
Tried using ipad 3 as hotspot

But still activation server cannot be reached.

iTunes says unable to verify device

Finally activated through iTunes!

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez, no wonder it gave me grey hairs, I only paid R6550 for the iphone 5 so was worried it was second hand and somehow blocked, but it's working now thank the lord.

Eish, so on my iPhone 5S I started having activation issues in December, ignored it BUT now back at work and trying to get it activated - Tried

activating via iTunes after a complete reset
activating over wifi by going into Aeroplane mode


Just get iMessage Activation - Could not sign in

My email addresses appear but the number doesn't anymore

Not even allowing me to sign out of iCloud on the device, verification failed - the connection to iCloud timed out

Tried 3G, Afrihost and 2 different adsl wifi lines.
