I've had it with web clutter. I've been using adblock for ages and enjoy it as is, but occasionally I find it misses something I would have chosen to opt out of - often not ads, but still....

So my fav youtube filters are:

Youtube - block the suggestions side bar (messy)
www.youtube.com##.watch-sidebar

Youtube - block the suggestions at the end of a movie (also messy)
www.youtube.com##.ytp-endscreen-content

Youtube is decidedly cleaner looking without those to pieces IMO... and when it's done, you get a clean little black block.
Call me pedantic but... my brain needs the space.

Likewise.
First thing I install after getting chrome :D

Adblock (plus) also makes a lot of difference (better) on your daily browsing experience.

Sure great idea. Let's now take money away from the little guy.

Or the upcoming Justin Biebers... Let's all feel bad because some of us want to and can block annoying adverts.

Sites that I visit regularly are whitelisted.

Not sure where but I read somewhere this past week that by just opening the video the add collects a click. Will see if I can find it quickly.

So even if blocked it seems that it still registers as if clicked, that was my understanding.

Just thinking now....that is actually bad if true, means the advertiser pays for the click without the viewer even seeing his add......

without ads 90% of the interwebs wouldn't be here
Not so, it would just be a different animal. Nobody can argue it would be worse.

It's a catch 22 for me, I really do hate the clutter so I don't visit cluttered sites.

The story of marketing - mind boggling numbers that people are prepared to pay in the name of advertising. We are bombarded so much these days that we don't notice them anymore. The only thing I notice is the disorganisation and messiness. Next time you drive down the road, just make an effort to notice the sheer number of ads you pass, and what they add to (or take away from) the atmosphere of the neighbourhood.
Try to picture the place without them.

Of course it would be worse. Do you have any idea how much it costs to run a site like Youtube? The site would be paywalled or not exist at all.

You think the world would be worse without youtube as we know it? What kind of stress and worries do you carry around all day?
They would either find other income avenues, or the cr@p would be filtered off (not every tom dick or harry would post videos). The latter suits me fine. No, just because you can't imagine a world without advertising, doesn't mean it can't exist. A paradigm shift is long overdue IMO.

Would be interesting to know because I've always actually thought I should consider whitelisting YouTube. As much as I hate ads, I actually watch YouTube a fair amount and the people do earn their living off it so it's a small price to pay I guess :p

I use AdBlock Plus all the time. I cannot stand ads, especially those goddamned intrusive ones that flash a bloody colourful banner and ruins an otherwise neat webpage, or a button that says download but it's actually not. **** ads. I have no time for that.

I've only ever seen torrent sites use those ads. Google has policies against those types of ads on adwords.

Of course I can imagine a world without ads. Everything will become more expensive. Will affect everything from TV, Radio, magazines, newspapers to the F1 grand prix even. Already we have plenty of news sites that are being paywalled and even a site like game trailers is suffering because of adblock.

You thought DSTV was expensive now. Without the advertising revenue it would have to at minimum double subscription prices.

Nope, various sites where legit applications can be downloaded. Those bloody fake download buttons and rolling ads at the side, and pop-ups, are now a thing of the past.

No, I don't have an example of such a site now. Even IOL and News24's sites are a disgraceful mess, complete with clickable background ads. No thanks.

..and the rest of us appreciate your effort :D

+1 on News24. My site is way cleaner now.... even News24's own content has been blocked in some places on my setup.
