Adblock + Youtube = :)

Until you come across a site that forces you to disable the ad-blocker...

The benefits of having a modified hosts file far outweigh such a scenario. I've yet to find such a site anyway.

Sites that detect an ad-blocker running are seeing it at browser level, and the hosts file I imagine is invisible to them, so I think your argument is moot.

That is true. But I will still use an ad blocker at all times. I have also yet to encounter a site that forces me to disable it, and if I do come across one, and I really need that site, I'll unblock just that site.

I run chrome with adblock plus and a modded hosts file. Best of both worlds. This is one of the few sites I've got whitelisted. The rest? Pah!

There are sites that do that, although I don't think they block the ad blocker, the ads that are blocked just reveals a background with a notice that they are aware of your ad blocker. That background could have been a picture of anything for all it matters.

One occasionally finds such a site. They're very rare though.

I recall reading somewhere that Google's own research revealed that less than 2 % of Chrome users worldwide installed adblockers, so they were content to leave the issue and let people continue using adblockers. For now.

I mean, one has to wonder how a company whose main form of revenue is from advertising allows add-ons that threaten that very revenue stream, and on their very own flagship browser. I guess they know it's just the geeks who do it. And a few of their friends.

As a pc tech I see lots of pc's, probably thousands over the last 10 years, and I can't recall a single one of them having an adblocker installed. That is of course those who are using chrome or firefox as the default browser.

Ad Block does not block Google ads by default. Also the type of info you provide when you use Google for your daily search queries is also data for Googles' ad and marketing businesses. I have no problem with small unobtrusive inline ads. I have no problem with articles which contain promotional material. Likewise Amazon links to purchase things from inside the article are cool too.

ABP is way more flexible. What if the content you want to block is within the site's own domain?

Yip, that's it. I think that's actually just a background image, and the ad usually gets displays on top of that.

Just checked that...
It's not background image,it's text displayed instead of advert when it fails to load. Normally there is no hidden text in this section.

Interesting. So this could actually appear if an ad fails to load for some other reason than an ad blocker?
