Adblock + Youtube = :)

Of course I can imagine a world without ads. Everything will become more expensive. Will affect everything from TV, Radio, magazines, newspapers to the F1 grand prix even. Already we have plenty of news sites that are being paywalled and even a site like game trailers is suffering because of adblock.

You thought DSTV was expensive now. Without the advertising revenue it would have to at minimum double subscription prices.
Let me see your logic...
you think advertising makes stuff cheaper for you?
You think companies have special income sources (not from revenue) that pays for advertising.
Ok then.
No point in arguing that logic :p

Advertising generates cash and makes stuff free! Wow, why the heck doesn't everyone just advertise instead of going to work then? Crikey. Didn't think of that.

Next time your bank sends you those glossy leaflets, don't forget to thank them for not charging you for the printing costs.

Yeah, I certainly do not give a whore's arse for anyone making a living off YouTube. Wouldn't they get their money anyway, regardless of ads being blocked?

How would they make their money if you block the ads? Think about it... very carefully.

Quite often those glossy leaflets are also educational. Some people are unaware of what phishing is. It is in the banks best interest to create awareness too you know.

Advertising in many instances subsidises certain product offerings. What would SABC charge us for our TV licenses if no one bothered to advertise with them?

The online ads have two sides. On the one hand the YT user gets paid for the ad, on the other hand, the customer who watches the ad will not have purchased the product. It's a bit like taking leaflets from the beggar at the robot because one feels sorry for him and wants him to fill his quota sooner. You then chuck the leaflet away. Yet someone paid for that ad. By blocking the ad, at least the advertiser is not screwed over. And YT is welcome to include small text ads which don't spoil your experience. This goes for all sites. Adblock by default permits small inline unobtrusive ads.

Besides >90% of the content on YT is copyright infringement stuff. And of that which isn't, how much is stolen anyway?

On top of this, I use Greasemonkey scripts to remove those pesky videos with disturbing thumbnails and/or annoying youtubers which I have no interest in, but keeping popping up EVERY. DAMN. TIME.

In general, Adblock+ is must have (especially on mobile, since it is easy to tap on of those ads with unwanted consequences). Since I began using it, I forgot about creepy chicks adverts haunting my nightmares and ruining browsing experience.

That is other side of adverts which I despise, where copyrighted stuff is posted just to get revenue from it.

I have no concerns there, but thinking they're free because you don't see a line item saying 'glossy leaflets' on your bank statement is naive - it's the same principle with advertising. When you buy your bottle of coke, you're paying their ad bill along with the rest... heck, you're even paying for them to advertise to people who hate the stuff. If you use the product being advertised, you are paying the subsidy... every time.

See now you're just sounding like a pirate trying to justify his actions. That stats you pulled out your ass is such bull****. With YouTube's content ID system, copyright infringing content gets immediately block automatically.

Yes the figure is accurate for me. I find that of the stuff I search for 90% or more is copyrighted stuff.

Now you're sounding like someone who never used Youtube to surf more than his favourite Richard Dawkins videos. Come on latex man.

Yet I see copyrighted content on YT all the time. And not just direct copyright such as full length movies, full freaking game play throughs, music videos, copied TV documentaries, in game music videos, freaking full length anime videos, full length Hollywood/Bollywood/Korean TV dramas/films, music from films/OSTs/etc.

YT's copyright blocking system only works I guess if copyright owners make a concerted effort to use it. However it definitely does not seem to work very well, because I can find a ton of copyrighted stuff just by looking for say mere trailers of films or reviews, full episodes come up, soundtracks and so on.

Just watching the Bioshock and Wolfenstein play throughs the other day, has put me off buying these games. Both games actually sucked but I got to experience the type of "action" going on in them by watching a few episodes of the game play.

Google and YT make money off me. I don't have to justify anything to you. Grow up kid and stop moralising based on your little subjective preferences.

(Never mind that you promote copyright infringement by linking to Netflix in your signature.)

What's also interesting is that YT could block ad blockers. It's easy to detect them. Yet they don't even put up a message about them.

Never mind that blocking ads is good for privacy. Maybe if advertisers and Google did not track people as rabidly as they do, and did not throw junk ads, which are skippable anyway and off putting, fewer people would use ad blockers.

I should also add that YT contains a ton of videos of the warez variety telling people where to download cracks and how to bypass copy protections on commercial or shareware software. Some of these videos are several years old. Search any application name e.g. Winzip and you'll see a ton of links on how to get the software for "free".

Um no. I don't surf youtube at all actually. I have a list of people I'm subscribed to and watch all their original content.

That's nice. Except if you search for things, which is nice because I have a variety of interests, I often --more often than not--find copyrighted material in the search results, this ranges from full episodes to less obvious things such as videos with copyrighted music - maybe less famous variety - to whole concerts and even game play throughs and game music videos. Original content exists and many producers even offer ads inside their videos via way of graphics, messages from sponsors and product placements or the videos are about particular products. However YT has no shortage of copyrighted stuff, warez stuff, etc.

Do a search on say Jean Claude Van Damme, this is what I get: (first page of results)

Volvo Trucks - The Epic Split feat. Van Damme (Live Test 6)
Jean-Claude Van Damme (Knock Off) full movie
JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME - Once upon a time in Isreal 2014 full movie SEARCHING SOME ONE
Jean-Claude Van Damme Shows Off His Moves at The Grove!
Jean Claude Van Damme - Behind Closed Doors (Episode 1)
Jean Claude Van Damme No Retreat, No Surrender FULL MOVIE
IN HELL JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME) 2003 FULL MOVIE
JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME EN "INFERNO" (PELICULA COMPLETA)
Black Eagle (1988/Full movie/English) Jean-Claude Van Damme
Top 10 Jean-Claude Van Damme Moments
Jean Claude Van Damme Kicks Compilation
Jean-Claude Van Damme: Bloodsport Final Fight (1988) - High Quality
Kickboxer - Jean-Claude Van Damme 1989 (Training Scenes)
Jean Claude Van Damme - Behind Closed Doors (Episode 7)
Jean Claude Van Damme - Behind Closed Doors (Episode 8)
Jean Claude Van Damme on The Late Show (1994)

The bolded ones are copyright infringement.

In fact Youtube even suggested "full movies" after Jean Claude Van Damme in the address bar.

OMG YT IS EVIL!
/off to find a video on YouTube about YouTube being run by the Illuminati

without ads 90% of the interwebs wouldn't be here

Some days I also think the internet is 90% ads. Mostly when I'm using someone else's computer :D

There are sites that do that, although I don't think they block the ad blocker, the ads that are blocked just reveals a background with a notice that they are aware of your ad blocker. That background could have been a picture of anything for all it matters.

How would they make their money if you block the ads? Think about it... very carefully.

And also, after thinking about it very carefully, don't they get paid a certain amount for a certain amount of views? Does a view not count as a view if ads are blocked?
