Is sucking on an e-cig really 'breaking the habit' of smoking? Same actions, just a bit healthier, still addicted to nicotine etc.

What made my now-deceased granddad stop his chain smoking from 16-62 was the laws that forbade smoking in buildings, as he ended up in hospital with his emphysema and wasn't allowed to smoke in the hospital. Never touched a cig after that day. He looked much happier and relaxed the 6-7 years that followed before he passed away.

Don't wait for most of your life to be over before you stop being an addict. You are in control of your own body!

Totally right about the e-cigs. I 'stopped smoking' for about a year thanks to my e-cig but the problem is you still are addicted to nicotine so still get cravings. I went back to smoking but did manage to quit 7 months ago. After a few months it became very easy, except for after a few drinks when willpower becomes compromised. So far so good.

Depending on what your addiction is, myself and a few others are growing plants used to combat addiction, a friend of mine is a principal researcher in the field of ibogaine. This compound has been used to stop opiate and heroin addiction in its path. Anyone struggling with that should check it out. Just beware its extremely potent and sometimes people are unable to handle its therapeutic effects.

Might seem a bit strange, but I'm not preaching. These words can motivate anyone struggling. Keep strong my friends. I love you.

Thanks Dude. I am realy considering starting to use again. Everything is just such a boring scam and there doesn't seem to be anything i can do to change it, a week ago i decided to postpone untill the birthday of the kid i am paying for. Have not had contact for about 6 months now. But that is not the problem. The transparent relentless institutionalized scams are. And the fact that i am an atheist...

My nemesis is definitely booze and I never realised how it was affecting me. Been making a big effort to not drink at all but when a family member rocks up at the door with a bottle of red it's hard. My problem is 1 tastes like 2 and so on till its all finished.

im such a sucker for social boozing. Its been ok for a while, but lately I've boozed a lot, and with the booze comes really stupid ideas to do other things.

Best thing for me is to not drink at all, easier said than done

I hear you, although I'm pretty well behaved when I drink. I don't do stupid things most of the time. But I'm still hopeless at controlling my intake.

things have been going quite well for me. I've managed to stay relatively narcotic free and even my boozing has slowed down severely.
But I honestly feel like I am going to self destruct, it always seems to happen. Things are going great, work is good, home life is great and I just tend to gravitate towards making a disaster of things.

So far though I have avoided it, but every now and again i get these really dumb ideas

Please don't buy the cheap crappy ones, go do some homework about them first and buy the decent liquids as well otherwise it will not work. I started with a twisp but have moved onto a iStick mod, which give's more flavour, clouds and hit. Good luck, it worked for me and many others, keep in your head all the time why you are stopping and you will :)

Of course the rest of the world is moving to ban e-cigarettes, as they say they are just as harmful and addictive as regular cigarettes...

Free addiction assessment. I've been reading posts here and it seems a lot of people aren't sure if they're addicts or not. So here's what i can offer you. A free assessment. I'm an owner of a drug rehab, there's no other rehabs o\that will give you this for free but i'm also a recovering addict so i understand where you're coming from. email help@therehab.co.za http://viewpointrecoverycentre.co.za

Talking about AA...

I actually edited this post because reading what I wrote made me realize I was being a self-centered prick and exactly opposite of everything I learnt in that big old blue book.

Anyways I'm missing the lads from my local community so me thinks I'll go pop in this week for a visit again! :D

Anyone here know something or someone who's addicted to watching TV? I think a friend of mine is fast approaching this addiction, from what I read up on it so far it's not so much the TV content, it's not as if a person with this addiction will become a expert on all series and sports they watch. It's more like their happy place, they lie in front of the TV and zone out to their own world, if you ask them in a hours time or tomorrow what they watched, they can't even tell you.
Long and the short of it is a person wasting half their life in front of the TV, eventually they withdraw from society, they start making excuses not to leave home, not to go out because they want to watch TV, I'm talking +-70 hours per week here.

I've smoked for many many years and always tried to stop but never managed. This 1 time I got flu and went to the doc, chest was weezy etc. Long story short, she prescribed me some Zyban (hope spelling is correct) I went cold turkey and after about a week I felt this was it. I havent smoked in 5 years and the smell of ciggarettes alone make me nauseas. Funny enough I cant believe I use to be a smoker at one point. This is what I used http://patient.info/health/bupropion-zybanr

A brief overview of smoking and nicotine addiction
Nicotine is a substance that is inhaled from the tobacco in cigarettes. It gets into the bloodstream, and stimulates the brain. Most regular smokers are addicted to nicotine.

If you are a smoker, when the blood level of nicotine falls, you usually develop withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, increased appetite, inability to concentrate, irritability, dizziness, constipation, nicotine craving, or just feeling awful. These symptoms begin within a few hours after having the last cigarette. If they are not relieved by the next cigarette, withdrawal symptoms become worse. If you do not smoke any more cigarettes, the withdrawal symptoms peak after about 24 hours and then gradually ease over about 2-4 weeks. So, most smokers smoke regularly to feel 'normal', and to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

About 2 in 3 smokers want to stop smoking but, without help, many fail to succeed. The main reason why so few smokers succeed, even though they want to stop smoking, is because nicotine addiction is strong and difficult to break. This is where bupropion can help.
