Addiction advice thread

Hi all.

I have ADHD and Anxiety.
I am a heavy stress smoker. I am a biker, so I use speed to also vent frustration. I have self destructive tendencies.
Also crippling low self esteem. I also stress drink. I also have a short temper, that I can mostly control

I haven't really tried to quit smoking as I do not really want too, as it is my only coping mechanism.

My favorite poison is Guinness and Stella Artois, and copious amounts of nicotine.

I smoke out of sheer boredom too.

Speeding actually forces me to concentrate. I've been attempting to learn Programming, and try channel extra energies into that instead of my bike. I've been battling to quit smoking. I do offset smoking with exercise, I do that merely to offset the physical damaging smoking and drinking does. I have a very healthy diet too, I eat very little red meat and I think my diet is fairly balanced.

I also think I am a bit of a control freak as well, and I really need to learn how t let small things go and learn how to roll with the punches too.

You sound like me 8 months ago.

I was recently diagnosed with clinical depression, anxiety and ADHD. Im also epileptic which doesnt help.

My Doctors recently put me on Concerta (Ritalin.) Say what you want about Ritalin, it saved my Life, I finally know what "normal" people feel like. Before the Ritalin I felt like I was living in a Michael Bay movie...absolute chaos with no story line. Im finally on the right dosage of meds...and My life has changed in a big way.

Hello. My friend wants to know if she is addicted:
She had trouble sleeping one night then decided the next night to take Ivedal (Zolpidem). It worked so good she decided to take it every night, but on the second week of being on it she felt very drowsy & confused during the day not unlike a bad hangover. She thought this to be caused by the sleeping pills and stopped taking them, however for the next two days she did not sleep at all and still felt hung over. She took the pills again but a few days later the hangover was back but this time much more severe. She then flushed the pills down the drain and again could not sleep. The few moments that she was able to sleep she recalls having horrible vivid nightmares. 4 days later the 'hangover' still persists and still has vivid dreams.

Your advice will be appreciated. Is this addiction withdrawal?

I used to work night shifts years ago. 5 on, 5 off, then back to days, 5 on, 5 off. I found myself unable to sleep on the day rotation as by then my body had adjusted to being awake until 08:00 every morning. Queue Ivedal. Half tablet worked a charm, and was sleeping soundly. Until my body built up a tolerance, and started taking an entire pill. Would literally knock me out in about 2 minutes. And I'd wake up the next day with that hungover feeling your friend describes.

I stopped working nights, but could NOT fall asleep without a tablet, no matter how hard I tried, so continued taking the pills, for about 2 years, and then I moved to the UK, where I have yet to source a lenient pharmacist who will just give it to me over the counter (it's S5 iirc).

I've sourced some random OTC crap from Boots (UK version of Clicks) after having tried all sorts of "natural" remedies that didn't work. Started on the 25mg tablets which were enough to just take the edge off so that I could eventually fall asleep. Those stopped working this year so I've moved onto 50mg tablets. There have been nights where I've run out, and ended up lying there awake wondering if penguins have knees until 05:00 - my alarm goes off at 05:30. Oh how I long for Ivedal again!

I think my circadian clock is now permanently ****ed, in addition to suffering from adrenal burnout (commonly referred to, quite accurately, as "tired but wired". Exhausted, but your mind won't shut down so you can sleep). I'm doomed, I think, to rely on chemicals to shut down every night just so I can sleep. It's the most annoying thing, because I have no problem staying asleep once I'm out - it's the crossing point from consciousness to REM that I've struggled with for years.

TL;DR: yep, your friend is addicted to sleeping tablets. And so am I...

Have you perhaps thought of using cannabis oil to help sleep?

Gave it a think a while ago, but we're still governed by the EU, and rumour has it that they've stopped people selling it so that they can figure out how to regulate it, so it's hard to come by. It's probably easier to get real cannabis!

Weed must be dead easy to come by in London.

From what I've read in the news it's such a big industry now(cannabis oil) I'm pretty sure you can order it online, especially in the Uk.

Does cannabis oil have the same psychoactive properties as normal weed?

All the same effects, apart from the high, as it doesn't contain THC.

It most definitely does contain THC. Lovely stuff. It is hemp and CBD oil that are THC free.

I'm using it now to help me sleep without sleeping pills. Much healthier alternative without that heavy head feeling the next day.

Most certainly does contain THC :)

The strength varies, but the THC is a important compound. Some may have very low THC and high CBD levels.

What is cdb oil?

CBD is one of the compounds in cannabis that has great healing properties. It is the molecule that is responsible for reducing seizures in kids and adults with epilepsy. Although THC has medical properties it is also the compound that gets you high, so generally for medical applications a lower THC and higher CBD is preferred. Obviously for stoners the opposite of this is wanted, high THC and the CBD level becomes less important.

So really CBD oil is nothing more than cannabis oil, just higher in CBD and low THC meaning you wont get high off it but you will be getting the medicinal benefits.

Whilst not high, there's still a relaxing feeling that comes with taking CBD oil. For me there's a slight cognitive shift as well.

Where can you get it from?

I'd like to try something to help switch my brain off at sleep time and ever since melatonin was scheduled out of reach I don't have anything on hand.

I used the liposomal 100mg and 2-3 drops is sufficient, the recommended dose is 5 drops.

I've also found Ashwaganda to be useful for helping to switch off at night. Take about 2 hours before bed. The Solal KSM-66 is quite well studied: https://www.solal.co.za/ashwagandha-extract
You could also try Magnesium (glycinate, not citrate): https://www.solal.co.za/magnesium-glycinate

I know that the first step is to admit that you have an addiction. Does 2 bottles of alcohol per week make me an addict? Since November I have been drunk every night but I feel great during the day. I don't bother anyone while drunk and only start drinking when the family is asleep.

I suggest you read up on Prof Carl Hart.

As Hart continues: “I do not have a drug-use problem. Never have. Each day, I meet my parental, personal and professional responsibilities. I pay my taxes, serve as a volunteer in my community on a regular basis and contribute to the global community as an informed and engaged citizen. I am better for my drug use.”
