Hi folks

One of the last feedback threads: Which services/forums/sections would you like to see from MyADSL/MyBroadband in future?

There have been a few forum changes lately, but how about other sections (like the blogs or job sites discussion) or even services… Or maybe our own articles/investigations (we have started that, but slowly). Please note that everything must be free to members, so a MyADSL airport taxi service might drain our finances :D

Your feedback/comments will be great.

Regards,

RPM

I'd like to see a "beginners guide to broadband" section, since alot of people ask the same questions over and over, it would be nice to find all those things in one place, since lots of people are switching over to broadband connections, i'd be glad to help complile a section like that....

another section that would really help would be an ADSL outages section similar to the SAIX one ...

thanks :)

I was thinking about this a week or so back, and in my own mind, the way to judge whether we need more sections/forums, is to look at the types of threads in the Off Topic forum...similar threads that regularly get created/moved to the O/T forum are an indication that perhaps they deserve their own forum...

There are a few threads scattered about, that relate to browsers like FireFox and IE, and email apps like ThunderBird...so I was thinking, if we extended/clarified the scope of the Internet Security forum, by changing its description from "All Internet security related discussions", to:

"Discussions about: operating systems, firewalls, anti-virus, anti-malware, browsers, email, etc"

It might also be an idea to consider a "Networking/LAN Basics" forum...

What does everyone else think?

Job section - Yes (IT related only)
Buy/Sell - Yes (IT related and personal sales only, there are ads for companies)
Blog (s) - Perhaps but I'm leaning towards no.
Telkom Lies/Jokes :D - That's what Off Topic is for ;)

To add to the above :

PC/Network Support (for all tech issues not related to your broadband connection)
PC/Network Discussion (these discussions are currently all over the place, would be nice to have a dedicated section)

I say PC/Network for want of a better name but you get the idea ;)

and i still want consumerism and deregulation in its own block with general discussion
active campaigns and consumer watch as three headings underneath it - its too hidden away right now and people should be able too see WHAT we are doing...

Do you mean it should look something like this?

NOOOOOOO not a sub forum. A forum in its own right, under announcements forum. We took flak recently in the press that we are a bunch of whingers who dont actually do anything - this makes it VISIBLE that we are and will continue to do something about the situation.

Um - I just posted this in the other thread - oh well - lets put it in its place :p

A definition for broadband - MUST HAVE - I was talking to someone who thought that iBurst was broadband and nothing else was - the though the service was called Broadband :p

The broadband for beginners idea is great - as I said what about a wiki?

Make the studies more obviouse

These are all for the home page but hey - they are needed :D

Agreed - I am also getting confused - could you get that section to list by date posted - then it will be easier to find the correct one

I personally think all our media coverage and radio interviews should be filed as ACTION COMPLETE in the Active Campaigns and Consumer Watch forum so it is visible as WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED.
Keep beating this drum but i believe we will have a lot more credibility to the average guest if they can see we are prominent, we are public and we are heard and we get results.
It would be nice to see all our activities past and present listed there including the ICASA Hearing main thread.

Agree with Peapod.

But what we should have for every radio interview

Station:
Presenter:
People interviewed & companies/forums:
What did the interviewee (mostly RPM I would imagine :D ) think was achieved.

I'm Volunteering again.....

(posted this in the guest post too)

We need to do some serious "customer" relations ourselves on this forum.
So many valuable and knowlegable (sp) members have gone quiet and when i look at their profiles see that they have quitely slipped away....NO GOOD.
I am volunteering to get in touch and encourage their return. I also think that where we cannot resurrect members, we should deactivate their accounts. this will give us a true reflection of our numbers.
I also think to encourage members to log on and to encourage guests to register that the guest pages should limit browsing to just the last post. I f people want to see the whole thread, they must either log on or register. registration is FREE and TOTALLY ANONYMOUS so I dont think this is too much to ask, especially since the site will automatically log you on anyway on your next visit. If we are ramping up what we do, we have to get our numbers straight. Thoughts?

I also think that our "MyADSL Master/Senior Member" etc tags should be changed for very active members to identify the areas we are most useful in...for example Mr Buys says "Legal Eagle" MaD="Activist", Debbie2="Politics, Consumerism,Telecomms, Activist", Peapod "Activist, Consumerism, Press, Government" so that we can see where we contribute.

Thats my sunday morning brain dump and I am absolutely prepared to do the work entailed to sort out our numbers and so on. Happy to do it in fact.

Le Pod

It's great that you're being so pro-active Peapod. My thoughts on your ideas:

I think its a great idea to try and get in contact with our members who have disappeared over time. I miss the input of people like Loosecannon.

But I have to totally disagree with deleting accounts if you can't get hold of them. Just because they have not logged on in however long, doesn't mean they won't come back when they are ready and they shouldn't come back to a deleted account.

I also encourage people to register, but I'm not sure I like the idea that they have to register to be able to view the board. Afterall, this is an open forum. Yes, it's totally anonymous, but some people might have their reasons for not wanting to sign up. I don't think they should be forced to sign up.

I don't have an opinion on changing the tags - I don't see what purpose it will serve to change them, but if you feel it's essential for myadsl then I can't say I'm apposed.

Given that the Majority of forumites are Anti-Telkom and are looking at an alternative, How a about a Section Covering the Progress / Birth / Rollout Status and Technology of the SNO.

A general consencous in my office is the following.

They will NOT hardwire to Your Office/Home.

They will Pop a Tower on Every SA Lalaways Station/Siding and Premises
They will Pop a Tower on Every Eskom Substation and Office Grounds Sites.
They will give you a wimax box for self install at (Rawlbolt on wall and Provide Power and Antennaa) Home/Office which will have two Jacks - One will be UTP and the other will be analogue Telphone Line. -No need to Replace HandSets. Therefore releatively cheap to install and maintain in the Sticks.

I agree. My gut tells me the SNO is going to go mesh. look at who the players are and its not hard to figure out.

Is there a way to have a topic in more than one section?
...
Ok, the answer is sort of, a specific thread can [AFAIK] only be in a specific forum, however when moving a thread from one forum to another, it is possible to leave behind a "redirect link" to the thread itself.

It is also possible to clone/copy an entire thread, which creates a totally new thread and totally independent copies of posts from the source thread to the destination thread - posts are not shared, so editing what appears to be the same post in the source thread will not result in the copy of the post being updated in the destination thread...which all means that you end up with 2 divergent threads which is obviously a recipe for confusion...

I agree with VQuest.

Suspending of accounts has been discussed before...not sure where that thread is...Google not compensating for my lack of brainpower...Google did find [thread=16531]this unrelated thread[/thread] though...

Wait, I have found it:

[post=154072]Should posters with (0) posts and inactive posters be deleted?[/post]

About the titles/"forum cred" - I have little & tending towards zero opinion, i.e. it makes no difference to me - the only time I'm aware of those titles, is when someone says "I'm a MyADSL Master now" - other than that my mind just ignores the titles altogether, but I can see how they might be important to everyone else :).

Hi guys

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree with VQuest: one can not delete account due to inactivity etc. It is definitely not an option to make the board register only (one of our aims is the free and open access to information).

Regarding users “titles”: This board has various functions, but it is tricky to start to assign titles to users. We should all know who the mods are (for complaints etc.), but unless there is a specific purpose in this title I think we should steer clear of it. We have a users-group called ‘company representatives’ (they have a larger mailbox for obvious reasons), but this is still a secondary group. I think if the person is an official representative of MyADSL we can create this user group (and give them that title), if not we should rather not go down this route.

Your feedback is most welcome as usual.

Regards,

RPM
