Hey guys.

I have 384kbps ADSL and a Billion 5102, I've had Telkom send out a useless tech twice which can't find fault.
By the looks of it my line stats are really bad. They are as follows:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 15 - 14
Line Attenuation 63.5 - 31
Data Rate 384 - 128

I get intermittent sync loss. Is there anything I can ask them to do to improve my line? I'm under 2KM from the exchange. Not sure about the exact distance, but it's 1-2KM.

At the current pace I'm not getting anything out of them... just wasting my time.

your line attenuation is very high. this can only be brought down by either you moving closer to your exchange or telkom installing a mini dslam cabinet closer to your house.

Just tried that nifty calculator link and here are my results:

Enter your Downstream attenuation (dB) 8.0
Cable Loss (dB/km) – Default 13.81
Attainable Rate (ADSL1) – kbit/s 8000
Attainable Rate (ADSL2) – kbit/s 23803
Distance to exchange (Meters) 579

To my knowledege there isnt an exchange on my block lol

Then again I'm one of the lucky 6144 downstream customers:

Data rate (Kbps) 6144 640

Noise margin (dB) 20.6 18.0

Output power (dBm) 9.8 12.4

Attenuation (dB) 8.0 4.0

I hate you. :D

We talked to a tech earlier in the week and he gave us the location of the exchange. It's def no more than 2KM away. Will drive there and see how far it is via car. :p

If it turns out I'm not billions of KM's away, what do I do? Telkom is as helpful as salsa on a bee sting.

AFAIK attenuation = copper distance between you and exchange. so if the exchange is closer than 5km then either you are not connected to your closest exchange or the cable route is very bad and the actual cable length is much further than the distance that you would travel by car.

Is it then possible to ask them about connecting me to a closer exchange or something?
I'm sure I have enough proof for them to do something with these line stats. I actually want to upgrade to 4Mb, but with this line... that's a faint dream...

ok sorry for typing structure - i've got a huge hoofpyn!

-plot graph (5sec/1000points) using routerstats (google).
-share the graph (photobucket).
-we go from there.

English or Afrikaans please? :o
What must I Google?

:confused::confused::confused:

Okay, I did that. But I bumped it up to 30 seconds, because 5 seconds hangs the app after a few minutes. It goes between 17-18. Obviously the SNR will be fine now, because it's a intermittent problem, something Telkom cannot comprehend. Should I take a screenshot anyway? Or wait till it's raining. It WILL lose sync then. During a sunny day, it's just random when it happens.

*edit*
Sometimes, there is a slight noise on the line while it's syncing. Other times it's very audible. Power just went off, and when it came back I couldn't sync. Picked up phone and there was extreme noise on the line. After a few minutes it finally synced, but @ 192k.

the thing is that if you have evidence (SNR and attenuation graphs that span over x hours) you make them believe that you are eagerly looking for a solution.

routerstats doesn't easily...either your windows is kaput/spyware.

get us a pic and share it.

as testing measures along with routerstats:

-unplug EVERYTHING , only keep router in
-try other router

having a 192 sync is correct - remember all the DSL profiles have a minimum sync and max sync (384).

It's not on the settings you said, but I did this.

I used 15 second intervals, as 5 and 10 seconds "hangs" the program. 15 works flawlessly. 5758 points. This works out to 24 hours. I wanted to monitor it over that period, but I already have results.

Sorry for the way the links are, only way they would work. :o

First up, my SNR Margin on the downstream.

You'll notice it dove to 8 twice, and then once straight up. I lost sync there on those 3 times. I'll show you now with the other pictures.

As you can see on SNR Upstream, Line Attenuation and Sync. I lost sync at those locations.

those graphs indicate to me that you have indeed a line problem.

request telkom to come and test your line with those advanced testers (sunrise sunset(black unit) / dynatel 965p (yellow unit).

where is your dsl exchange in kimberley - the BIG tower at the western side of town?

I'm actually not sure anymore of the location. I think that guy was talking rubbish. lol I am close to the tower though. I'd think it's there, cause there is a big Telkom sign on the wall. lol If the guy comes again, I'll ask where it is.

The guy that came last time climbed up the pole with some gadget and "tested" for like 30 minutes. I think it was a yellow thingy. Didn't find anything wrong with the line.

I'll try tomorrow night. See the thing is, what happens is, the program doesn't really hang. It just stops retrieving info from my router... and it sort of happens randomly. Can happen after a few minutes. Or a few hours.

Also, there was thunder tonight and I lost sync. As expected. I resynced @ 224kbps and haven't lost sync again... my SNR is on 31 now. I'll reset my router tomorrow so I sync @ 384kbps again.

PS. There wasn't even rain tonight, just a few thunder strikes in the distance and it made me lose sync. >_>

yeah ...now i have some trouble aswell on my side...

had lightning 2 days ago...and my 4096 sync had and snr of between 9 and 11.....after the strike , i could not even get a sync going!!!...luckily the netgear 834gt is a fantastic router - it retries like a ferrari to resync.. it finally got a sync on 3072 and i was able to continue my work...

however the damage (to copper/joint/wherever) was more severe than i imagined - had to phone 375375 and sync to 2048!!

at least it is ROCK stable now - but - there goes 2 megabit of performance...who's fault? what is the chance of them easily repairing it? zero...

i see you have the 5102G black router...that thing is very very very slow in doing resyncs...takes 4 ever :)

consider the netgear 834gt... (as routerstats also loves that thing).
