Hey guys,

Not sure if right spot but I'm looking to purchase a home in Waterfall in durban sometime early next year. Does anyone know if the area is provisoned for ADSL? They want a phone number to check but obviously I don't have one yet :p

Anyone know? I'd assume most exchanges by now are ADSL capable surely?

Try get the telephone number currently used at your future house, or that of your future neighbors, and you can check for yourself on the internet if the exchanges they are connected to are ADSL enabled. Visit:

https://secure1.telkom.co.za/app/dslavailability/

If your neighbours are connected to an ADSL enabled exchange, you are almost certain to be connected to the same exchange (but not always).

Plus I think most exchanges in Urban and Suburban areas are already ADSL enabled. It's probably just the ones in rural areas, dorpies, and farms that are not enabled. Probably not worth the cost for Telkom.

@ Legacy-Luddite

Look in a phone book -- or online for a business in Waterfall area then use that number.

Look for a geographical map for ADSL.

Phone the Telkom Hillcrest exchange.

Look for the location of somone here and PM them

Let Google look for you.

Go to a Telkom Direct shop

Sjoe -- I am nearly running out of options

Adsl Support The exchange supports ADSL.

You qualify for SIO (Self Install Option), SIO is a cost effective option which will enable you to perform an automated installation of your DSL Service with the aid of a CD based software which is available with all Telkom DSL modems, if you have your own modem you can download the instructions for SIO from the DSL website found here. You will require a modem to set up your service. Telkom modems are available from your nearest Telkom Direct Shop or via home delivery. To find out more about modems/the minimum PC requirement click here.

The provision of Telkom's DSL service is subject to network availability, distance, copper quality and line sync speed limitations.

Waterfall is a very large area...

I somehow doubt that Technically has a clue just how large it is given that he lives in the Western Cape.

Parts of Waterfall are provisioned for ADSL (I have friends that live in Waterfall) but some of the more rural parts are possibly not.

Hard to explain to some people just how "rural" Waterfall can be :D

They should look it up in GE. :wtf:

Pretty much..

Of course I'd also love to know how Technically can make a statement about qualifying for SIO when he has no idea which specific Exchange in Waterfall the client may be connecting to.

Having just a telephone number is meaningless as the ADSL test line just looks at the exchange number and in Durban's case its all 031 right up to Hillcrest.
Hillcrest has ADSL and Waterfall is part of Hillcrest so it should be no problem although I believe there are some parts (in the valley) that are a bit far from the exchange and they could suffer high attenuation which would restrict you to 384k.

Kosmik if you already know which house you are purchasing and you can get the Erf. No. a Telkom direct shop will be able to tell you with 90% certainty if that Erf is ADSL enabled.
