Hi All,

I have moved over here from UK, to Wilderness garden route. It being a semi rural place we had no ADSL at first so I have been stuck with a local wireless solution which is very slow 128Kbits on average, but uncapped. Im paying 600/month. Our exchange has been upgraded for a while now but I have held off changing over to ADSL because of the high prices and caps here. Which is still a bit of a shock even now.

OK to the point, most of our families internet useage is international, web browsing, SkY news BBC ect, Email with attachments. I am thinking of the Axxess 2gig basic package (never monitored my net usage before so bit nervous) and getting the ADSL line rental through them as they seem quite good value. Mr G on his sticky post dosn't really recommend them so anyone got any feed back on them.

I Also need just a ADSL modem as I already have a router. All I can find is Modem/Router combo. Any suggestions.

Thanks
Jon

This may sound silly, but get a telkom ADSL package of let's say 512 or 1024 and a normal 3GB telkom package.

They phoned me today and upgraded my line to 4096 @ R16 per month more, because I'm a telkom ISP client.

If you need more gigs if you've been capped on your telkom account, just buy prepaid gigs from either Webafrica or Axxess.

The reason I say it's best to make telkom your ISP is because they'll be introducing internet tv soon, which means bigger caps. I have a suspicion that by this time next year we'll have 10GB or even 30GB caps to choose from, it's just speculation from me however ;)

Router wise, ADSL modems aren't practical, you can't have more pc's connected unless you enable internet connection sharing, which also means one pc needs to be running all the time. If you get a telkom line and do a "self install" you get a free ADSL router/modem which means you could connect pc's via ethernet cable.

Ciao ;)

Start with the Telkom Do Broadband Level 2 for R258-00 pm which includes a 4GB cap - it says 2GB but is actually hardcapped at 4GB. See www.dobroadband.co.za. If this is inadequate then you can always upgrade with a quick call to 10219 or purchase additional bandwidth. Telkom usually charge to downgrade but not to upgrade. Choose the self-install option when you place the order (just make sure that you repeat the words *SELF-INSTALL OPTION* loudly several times so that there can be no mixup later). Telkom will call you to let you know when you can collect the free WiFi modem. I'm not sure whether you can get the self-install option on the garden route though. You better check this first. Otherwise you could also look at www.cybersmart.co.za. Telkom is probably your best option *if* you can get a self-install otherwise the installation charge is R490 and I don't think that you will get a free WiFi modem either. You better also confirm with Cybersmart whether or not they can supply you with a service in your area. Make sure exactly how much you will have to pay in installation charges before you proceed with any order and also whether or not you have to sign any contract.

I agree with Yotch - DoBroadband is the best way to go.

More value for money and if you do the self install you get a free WiFi router and NO contracts to sign.

Cheers Guys for your help, must admit not the advice I was expecting (Although clearly the competion in the market place is having a good effect on Telkom). Also thought you had to comitt to 24 month contract to get free modem. But am off to Telkom shop to order up.

The thought of being able to send emails with attachments without it crashing is filling me with excitiment:) Sad I know!

lol. I know what you mean.
Im busy using a GPRS connection and I get disconnected at least every hour.

The DoBroadband package would be the best for you. Just make sure you do NOT get yourself into a contract!!!!!!!!!
