ADSL consumer packages - A DigiChilli survey

i can live with 32kb/s..barely, on my 384 DC line.
i just wish it WAS 32 kb/s on my torrents, not 0.5 kb/s currently..painful to watch.

currently i can just browse...all my excitement of having an uncapped account has been stomped on by reality...

I would love business 4Mbit uncapped. Something that gave me close to the 4Mbits as possible 24/7. Screw torrents and p2p, I just want good http/ftp/voip for browsing, chatting, and basic downloading. I (actually my work) doesn't mind paying R2500/m for this with no long term contract. Currently most of these packages from ISP's struggle to get good quality speed during business hours.

Reality is move on to a better isp if you are not happy with your current one. You do have choices, vote with your wallet.

What packages do you want to see?

Prices, speeds, protocols, times, connections, contentions, etc.

CambodiaDave

Well your original packages seem very good by me (price wise, though I'm only looking at the 256k ones as I'm on 384k), once the speeds get jacked up a bit, and latency must be good enough for games too.

A couple of connections is good, don't want to be limited as far as protocols go as I never know what I'll be doing in the future.

Not sure what is meant by times, and as far as contention goes I don't want to find that my speed is very much slower or my latency very much worse because other people are going wild. 256k is acceptable to me.

I have a 4 meg line and would like to be able to use that speed. 384k uncapped is for downloader type people. I just need a bigger cap. I don't want uncapped, just a bigger cap at 4Mb. And at the same price as Do3.

So, same price as Telkom, just bigger cap.

Unshaped Uncapped 512k for R1000 non-concurrent, 512k QOS guarunteed (like you are doing now), and a 1-4mb version of the same account for R2000.

I don't mind paying R1000 for a 512k UNSHAPED uncapped. I need the latency for local gaming, so unshaped is the way to go.

Prices: R1/k burstable to double the paid for speed. IE: R250 single concurrent connection. R2/k for 2 concurrent connections.

Speeds: As advertised, starting at 256k burstable to double the paid for speed.

Protocols: "Dynamically unshaped" as you mentioned, sounds good.

Times: 24/7/365 for home users. Business clients should be on separate dedicated pipes and their nighttime spare bandwidth used for bursting at night. They need to specify that they are for business accounts and therefore will not use the service during specific hours. The system can be well balanced by knowing when specific clients will use the bandwidth.

Connections: Choice of single and double or even more, at R1/k/concurrent connection.

Contentions: 20:1 max.

I agree with the group of people that are saying that the current models are fine, rather concentrate on getting your network stable and running the minimum speeds you are advertising. However it may be your marketing people are bored and need a challenge :p.

I would love to see a unshaped account though however that is dreaming. :) I like the current offers just want my torrents, steam and http downloads to be "fast". :)

How about the packages you've "advertised" already?
So far all you've had is false advertising, never ending timeouts, speeds at 1kb, and now apparently you have a cap so it's not really "uncapped"
Wtf? The worst provider ever, well at least I know I'm not wasting my money with you anymore, as all I've gotten so far is unlimited timeouts for R300 and I can't even browse the web, well I can gladly say I'm never subscribing ever again.

This is worrying me.... that people are now saying they are willing to accept 256k on uncapped accounts.... I really think the minimum line speed should be the minimum uncapped speed.

Dave has said they will be launching a 384kbps package at some point.

Well, 256 isn't THAT bad. When I had my 384, I normally got 32-35 kB/s, rarely did it jump to 40. 256 kbps is 32 kB/s, so I wouldn't have noticed the difference.

Yes, people forget it's BURSTABLE to double the the speed you pay for. People can keep their 384k limited products... And now that telkom has stopped trying to ***** over the DC launch, it's flowing fine!

Great! I can teleport in Secondlife again! :D

That means http is flowing again!

Single thread download at the same time runs at around 13.5k

Both Secondlife and the download together, running at between 20-40k

Thanks DigiChilli! Kick telkom's *ss! :D

Speak for yourself :P its crawling on my side. It has its moments when things are good, and then there are moments like now, where its slow as hell :)

Yes, but as the DC website says, it will get better as telkom stops stuffing around.

We all know that DC are doing their best to be a successful business. They are trying hard to get and keep the service as per their business model and product specs.

I'm pretty sure that most issues will be sorted by Jan.

Latest news...

Hi All.

We will be making the last network change for 2009 between tonight and tomorrow night. Will give you a heads up before.

This is a big one, and will final resolve all of the performance related issues being experienced.

We need to shape the traffic across the network. This is to assign the correct priorities to traffic. Also to ensure that everyone gets what they pay for. (Still got some freebies chowing more than their fair share of the pipe.)

This is NOT shaping in the negative context of the word (i.e. throttling).

We will start to manage the quality of experience.

Yep, that means deep packet inspection, layer 7 management etc. So all of you who have been bury your 300 torrent connections into HTTP on port 80, well, you will still be able to do that, only we will assign a lower priority to the packet.

So, we will not be blocking anything, and when there is capacity, everything can burst.

This will DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE ALL HTTP BROWSING AND RESPONSE TIMES FOR ALL.

So we have tried unshaped, and it just does not work. I have pasted an e-mail to a user below. (more details)

I am expecting that after tomorrow we will see nothing but :D:D:D
all over the place.

Please let CambodiaDave know of your specific needs so that we can make sure they are taken care of (e.g if you need low quantity but very high responses on game servers etc)

More info to follow shortly.

Regards

Darren Smith
DigiChilli

Sir,

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback.
I will ask the team to consider all the options you have presented.

I understand you are offering these suggestions so that we can improve our service, something that we are desirous of.

In return for your thoughts, allow me to explain the process we have been through, and see if you have any additional thoughts for us.

Context:

For your information we have the following available:

1) 100mbps (upgradable to 2X 1Gbps) to Seacom.
2) 155mbps (upgradable to 4X 155mbps) to Saix.
3) 20mbps (upgradable to X 155mbps) local internet access.
3) 100mbps (upgradable to 20 X 100mbps) international to ISP in London.
4) 100mbps international internet access,

a) 98% of all our traffic is international, hence the international v.s. local split.
b) Our network is running at 100% international and 80% local throughput.
c) According to best practice ratios, we should only be using 20mbps for the number of users we have.

Bear in mind that for DigiChilli, international bandwidth is CHEAPER than local. (That may change some of your calculations)

1) The reason for the original performance issues at launch were due to a faulty link between our data centre in JHB and the Seacom Meet me room at Neotel in Midrand.
This had the effect of reducing my network performance down to 9mbps. This has been completely replaced and we have not network problems on the infrastructure.
2) We had some DNS issues, now resolved
3) We have some authentication issues, mostly resolved
4) We had users with many multiple connections (8-9)
5) We cannot control network protocol priorities (peeps encapsulating torrents etc into HTTP on port 80). Hence HTTP is very slow.

So we have a rock solid network, pushing +30Gb an hour.

Our issue is giving each user their fair share of the (big) pie.

To do this we have to look inside port 80 traffic and move some of it to a lower priority.

NOTE: We will never throttle traffic. Only prioritize.

So, for gamers, we can assign the highest priority to ensure the speed and latency is the lowest. But for downloads, we can assign this to priority 4 (for example).
If HTTP is not using its allocation, the other protocols will burst into the full available. So torrents etc will probably have full run at the pipe in the early hours (again and example.)

So shaping is not a bad thing. Its critical for the network to work as intended.

What we need to do do is work with valued users like yourself, to understand what your network priorities need to be.

Today / tomorrow we are installing a world class Layer 7 shaping device to help us do this better.

Also, we do not do any mirroring or caching at the moment. When we turn that on (next week) it will be even better.

Our strategy is to improve things every week. I am sorry for those users who have already given up on us (there are a few of those)
I am sure they will return when they see we have opened a can of whipass!

Please feel free to share this information with the general public.

Can anyone explain why internet is so expensive in South Africa?

I just compared the packages from my home country with yours, and
it's shocking!!

SA average for R300
0,8 Mbit/s
0,8 Mbit/s

NL average for R310
10,0 Mbit/s
1,5 Mbit/s

And than 80 procent of the time, you will reach that speed.

The difference is that ADSL in it's essence isn't that good for high speed internet.
In the Netherlands also ADSL isn't that liable. But we have also internet by cable.
It's the same cable you use for your tv. And with cable your speed doesn't drop when you live further from a ADSL centre!

Why isn't this a possibility in South Africa?
