Adsl - Dec, IP static?

I got this noncense this morning "TelkomInternet have opted to offer you an average usage option that will keep you online until such time that the average usage for all subscribers reaches the service threshold.

This means that we are allowing unrestricted access beyond your threshold instead of simply curtailing the service. However, your service may be discontinued once the average usage for all subscribers has been reached. You will then be required to top-up your threshold to remain online."

Via my moring usage email, it would have been nice if they warned us about this, Now if your reach the threshold bye bye internet, So i pay, for Telkom Internet, Line Rental, and NOW Telkom PAY AS YOU GO as well. I hope they get a cramp.

Any idea if this means that there is no soft cap at 3Gb but rather a hard cap at some indeterminate time when the 'average' user has hit 3Gb?

i.e. if ((usage_of_all_users)/(number_of_users) >= 3.0 Gb) hardcapped = 1;

??

Incidentally, today is the first day I've received this notification. Everything up to yesterday is the normal usage stats email template.

Telkom buys X amount of Gigs (Probably 1000's) from SAIX... they sell X amount of GB's to their clients... most of thier clients use 1GB or 2GB in a month... others use 40 or more. When the usage on their network reaches a point where the all the uncapped users can get a minimum of 3GB each, they hard cap the users that have exceeded their 3GB.

I hope that makes sense.

Yup, thanks. What I'm still curious about though is that it sounds like there will be no soft cap imposed at 3.0Gb anymore, i.e. the service will not be rerouted through a pipe that is utterly hamstrung.

EDIT: And now I have no clue when I'm going to be hardcapped after I've used 3Gb. I just have to wait and see if the average user exceeds 3Gb and then I'm cutoff for the rest of the month with absolutely no warning. This sounds like a brilliant plan to annoy even more customers than previously thought possible.

Well I'll be honest, I'm piggy backing on a capped Telkom DSL account (just for testing). The account is at 12GB at the moment and local & international browsing hasn't been comprimised. I get +/- 60k - 65k local and +/- 35k - 45k international.

Welcome to the fold of capped users. Now why on earth would YOU want to stay with Telkominternet?

Hope you didn't mean me... Telkomsa is our competitor; I'm simply using a friends account to test their services. Unfortunately we haven't focused on Dial Product sales... so we don't have the volumes to justfy bulk buying and soft capping.

Because for now, it's uncapped.
