Sorry if there is another post on this but doesnt seem like their situation is the same with mine. I am currently using a Netgear N300 router and the adsl light suddenly just drops and reconnects. I thought it was the router so I changed to another one (dlink dsl-2760u) worked for a while but same thing. I tried on another router (Planet router) plugged it in 2 minutes later drops again. I made sure it wasnt the router. I tried calling openweb, they said nothing was wrong, I cancelled with mweb but still have one month remaining so i tried with them. Exactly the same thing happened. I have called telkom COUNTLESS times they said everything was fine on their side, I still told them to log a fault, 2 days later I get a sms saying "dear customer, your fault has been restored". WTF! this has happened 4 times now!!. I really have no idea why or what could it be that my adsl keeps dropping!! Really frustrating! Does anyone have any solutions?! PLEASE HELP!

Check whether the power supply is still OK. The only way to really check is to get another one, plug it into your Netgear and see if the problem persists.

The reason I am mentioning this, my Netgear N300 is already on its third power supply, the first one was replaced under warranty and that one gave issues later with constant disconnects as you describe. A friend then gave me an old power supply out of a Telkom Router box he had as spare. So far the Telkom power supply is still working.

Okay I will try that, the only thing I dont understand is why does it constantly still drop even if I change routers then?

It would if you use the same power supply, or the other router is faulty. I have one of those DLinks in my cupboard, broken in the box.
I have an old Zyxel router I use as a spare, had it for 10 years now. I had to use that each time the Netgear went down with power supply issues.

You have to eliminate the obvious things first:
Hard reset
Check power supply
Login details
Are you capped
Pots filter
Telephone line

What speed does your router sync at?

I had exactly the same thing twice this year - every time it was a problem on the line. Giving us a different copper pair fixed the problem.

I am not saying your noise margin is the problem, but take a look at this thread.
A friend of mine in Plumstead couldn't get 4Mb stable and got Telkom to sync him down to 3Mb. Not saying this is your problem, but maybe worth taking a look.

I live within "klap afstand" of the exchange, less than 1Km, my noise margin and line attenuation is excellent to outstanding.

SG DSL Speed Calculator
According to this calculator you are only 1883 meters from the exchange, your theoretical ADSL Max Speed is 7954 kbps, if there aren't any problems on your side, I am inclined to agree with RPM.
If Telkom are not forthcoming with the wiring then consider lowering the sync rate.

And the POTS filter? Did you check that?

Pro Tip: Unplug it and give it a whiff, if it has a strong burnt smell, replace it.

Hi There,
yes you need to eliminate the POTS and everything that is under your control.
Do you have any other appliances on the same circuit e.g. kettle?
A surge in demand there could drop the supply to your modem.

Once you have eliminated everything then you can adk Telkom again to look at it.
Is there any noise on the line when you listen to it?
If there is first place a voice call. They generally respond better to those calls than data calls.
You also need to make friends with the Telkom guys in your area. Ask them to come out when you are at home over the weekend to check and then make them a cup of coffee while you show them all that you have done to isolate the fault being on your side.

Regards

I am convinced it is the Line. I had a Telkom 384 Line. Then last Year I was contacted by Mweb that Telkom would upgrade the 384 lines to 1 Mbps. I immediately knew when the upgrade took place as I lost the connection every few minutes. I called Telkom. then I was back up again. Then I made a speed test which showed slow speed. Then I called again and was told I have not been upgraded and they will do it right now. 2 Days later I get the famous SMS (which in itself is nice) but the line dropped again. Of course the Email also played up. Eventually when my problem was escalated a Technician called me and informed me that my line is dropping ( I cant remember the exact number) over a 100 times a day and they will have to limit me to 512/256. I left it at that as my line is working at that speed(at least I get 90% of that) and I had other more pressing matters to attend to like earning a living.

When I called telkom, the operator also said she could see my line has dropped over 100 times... I logged another fault and same thing 2 days later nothing had happened all I get is a sms saying problem resolved... but this time they actually called me asking if the line still drops, as soon as I said yes the technician was like "okay" then hung up...
