Hey all, firstly I hope you all having a great load shedding free long weekend;), secondly I hope I'm posting this in the right forum thread. OK,. My question is this...... How does a hotspot work? Not the technical side of things, Lets say I'm a Telkom or say an Web Africa subscriber and Im at a Airport, Guesthouse, Coffee shop that offers a hotspot, How do I connect? and are there costs involved? Thanks!

It's not called a ADSL hotspot, it's called a WIFI hot spot.

I know that if u at the airport or mugg and bean, you can connect for free for like 10 minutes, if u want more time, well, i'm not sure how THAT works :(

In good old SA, there are costs involved :)
Your wireless connection will pick up their connection floating around, and instructions will generally be on that page. They will measure your usage and add it to your coffee bill, or you can prepay and use it at any of their other facilities around the country, and top up as you go along.

Your ADSL accounts (the openweb/WA ones) usually dont work at the hotspots even though they are IS ones. If you want more than the 10 free minutes, you need a credit card or else I think they sell vouchers at the place itself.

And dont think that it's just like this in SA, overseas it's no different... Starbucks, macDonalds, all have Tmobile or so as their wifi provider. If you live there and have an account, great, if not you pay a fair amount for a 10 to 50kb/s connection.

Telkom's Hotspots you can either use your 512 line or higher telephone number and account number, then you have access to 10x30min sessions for the month, or can logon to the landing page at the hotspot and purchase credit online, they're quite expensive, like -+R1 a min, or can purchase a 1,3,5 etc day pass with like 200mb cap per day.

Wireless G cover majority of the hotspots now, Telkom has a few and the others are Mweb and a few others.

It's more for convenience then anything else.

If all else fails, just ask the nearest staff member that looks tech-savy.

Betal is die wet van transvaal. Or something like that...my Afr spelling is very shaky.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm now informed about ADSL Hotspots, sorry I mean WIFI Hotspots............ thanks

Delayed reply... sorry:

Don't forget about the 300 minutes per month that can be used if you're an Mweb subscriber! Available at most Mugg n Beans.
