Hi,

Just wondered why not everyone is doing this. Is there something illigal to this type of setup.

One unit in the complex should have a 4mb ADSL line, and each unit in the complex can just get their own ISP.

The body corporate could pay for the ADSL line.

Has anyone been able to do this?

Yes. I think that would be illegal. Have a look at Telkom's terms and conditions of use.

I have heard GTS is doing this in certain complexes in Pretoria.... Phone and ask :D

It's not illegal but it may be against someones terms and conditions.....

Who cares if it's illegal.

Get yourself a omni directional anttena....put it on your router and let a few of your mates in the complex share your connection :D

"Apparently" it works like a charm for some :D

Surely if you do something against terms and conditions which you agreed to, you are doing something illegal.

IMO, everybody who cannot afford DSL on their own should do this Henno. The trick is not to mention it to anybody when you do as I don't think Telkom will like it too much. F'em! If they wanna be so expensive, F'em! ;)

NOTE THAT THIS IS MY OPINION (AS ALWAYS) AND SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS THE NECESSARY OPINION OF MYADSL.

Who's GTS?

If you make the router sign into your account then don't you always only have 1 connection over the line so Telkom would never actually know?

I don't see any reason why you can't network your computers together. Then if someone manages to hack into your internet connection it's not really your fault :)

Seriously do it anyway. When they come around say sorry and leave it.

Run in a ipcop firewall pc inbetween the router and hub. Only one pc connects to the rounter (ipcop), and the rest connects to the hub side of firewall pc. only using one connection! :D
/me done with networking lesson 101 :D

.

I think the idea is for each person to have their own account and only share the line.

I would love for this setup to work for you, but my guess is the body coporate wont go for it. There is always going to be some granny in every complex who doesnt even know what the net is, and now she has to pay her portion of the bill.

If your aim is 4 units per line, then find three others to do what the posts above said. Of course if you go "private" with this and not through the Body Corporate, then each month you have to go round and collect the money from the other three. Real pain if one of them decides to not pay for a month cause he was holiday or something.

I would really think all the hasstle is not worth the saving you might get. Just go for a 384 line yourself and pay the R245

Very true in IMHO. Suppose it all depends on how much the saving means to you.

I tried doing exactly that while I was staying in a block of flats. I sent letters to all the residents, I basically got hate mail back saying "I don't want to pay for something I don't use - blah, blah" And I wasn't even suggesting a global shared payment!

Fuddy Dudies - gotta HATE them! :D
