ADSL installation fees crazy!

Closer 2 package is R170 per month although they bill you 1 month in advance so R340 for the first month.
Please note although you get free land line installation on closer 2 you might have to pay R700 deposit if you are not credit worthy to them.
R152 per month for line rental from Telkom.
Since you opt for self install, the activation of the ASDL line is free and a technician does not have to come to your house to plug the phone line cable into your router or verify your ASDL.
Total start up cost is R492 if you are credit worthy to Telkom or R1192 If you pay the deposit.
BTW Saman i was a 3g user 1 month ago and will never go back.
ASDL is such a huge leap in terms of latency, stability, online gaming and CHEAPER BANDWIDTH!

So demon angel, just to make sure I understand correctly: You pay R170 for Closer 2 + R152 DSL line line + R60 AfriHost ISP 2gb = R282 total monthly cost for 2GB DSL @ 384kbps?
I thought Closer 2 already included the DSL line rental in the R170 monthly.

Closer 2 is only the land line rental. The asdl rental[R152] is separate.
So its:
closer 2 R170
ASDL line rental R152
Afrihost R58 FOR 2 GIGS
Total:R380

I see. Sorry about the hopeless maths - I was obviously half-asleep when I did that calculation last night, LOL! Apart from the free calls its not much different from the vcom cost for same cap : (

But from there it is cheaper, as extra gb is only R29, or sometime R14.50.

Just remember if you pay for the phone line side it does come with free minutes....... How much would you be saving on your vodacom bill??? The rest is only just over R200. What you save on your phonebill might just cover your internet. So certainly sounds worth it :)

Here is a tip for all you soon-to-be ASDL users!

Garyvdh has been hinting at forumites, that very soon Telkom will bump up 4mb AND 384K users within 2 months.
Telkom are going to better the do broadband packages as well.
His predictions and hints have been very accurate and i think its time you people get ASDL now!
Imagine when this news breaks, the flurry of new users that will sign up at the same time.
Now as you know, if you apply for ASDL you can wait up to 1 year until a port at the exchange becomes available if your area is over subscribed, so with a sudden boost in ASDL subscriptions imagine how long you could potentially wait.....
Besides Gary's hint, my Telkom land line installer told me directly that things are gonna change soon and the wait for ASDL is gonna increase due to the upsurge in subscriptions.
He kept telling me that my timing was perfect.[Thank to Gary for that]

This was 1 month ago and adding that to Garys hint makes it almost a certainty in my book.

You could wait for it to happen and watch people feasting on cheaper bandwith whilst you are stuck with an expensive alternative and its too late....
Get it NOW!!!

True, but I mostly use the phone when I'm not at home, which is why I went with Telkom Prepaid for people to call us from landlines and not have to pay the mobile call costs. So the savings from VC will be moderate, while I will lose internet mobility which is very useful, especially since I use a HTC smartphone to check my mail, weather, etc.
I have been using an HSDPA wireless N router with a data sim to provide wifi access at home for about 2 yrs now, while using the same data bundle when on the move with my phone acting as a mobile wifi access point for my netbook or simply browsing on the phone itself.
This is a versatile arrangement other than the latency. I figured with all the hype about ADSL prices dropping, it might be cheaper than HSDPA by now.

Have you seen the post on MWEB's new packages coming soon? ;)

We'll have to see how well it works, but looks good

The installation fee is stupid tax, al you nee do is connect the router, filters then you are done if the line is activated. Self install is dead easy it's the same as buying your own router and following the instructions that come with it.

I was thinking of moving over to a ADSL fixed line since 3G is just to pricey for the amount of data I use lately...

Got the following from a Telkom outlet this morning:
- Land Line activation fee (there is already a line in place, just not activated): R468.05
- ADSL installation fee: R598.31
Total install fee: 1066.36

Telkom R U Crazy?! I only want a 384 kbps link...not a gold plated line into my house?

We all know telkom is crazy. Just DIY dude... I'm only 16 and I did it on my own for me, a few friends and family.. Really simple. Anyone with an IQ above 20 can do it.
