Update 1

So, situation changed to the level that I need ADSL at home. It is needed, not wanted, but cost / convenience wise, it now a viable solution compared to the other options.

Now, first thing first. There use to be a nice blog of someone on MyBB with all the info. I can't find it. Tried for a while, but gave up.

Therefore the creation of the new thread.

I am starting from scratch. I stay in a complex. I know other people have ADSL and telephones. So that is a good start.

So here are a few questions?

1. First thing. Complexes should have infrastructure in place, but some developers don't bother doing it. If the complex doesn't have the infrastructure, how will it impact cost and installation of the line? Most older complexes already have the infrastructure in place. Mine is one of them. But according to a few sources (MyBB and Telkom), if you are uncertain, you might need to have a Telkom techie out to investigate

2. What is self-installation? It is R700+. What does it entail? Do I need to take the Telkom installation option as I am installing the phoneline as well? If it is just for plugging in the modem, and setting it up, then I can do it myself. Self installation is great if you already have a telephone line and an ADSL line is added. If you install a brand new line, the ADSL cost is R700 and the telephone installation is R551. But the R551 is forfeited due to the R700 ADSL installation

3. According to Telkom, the ADSL max speed is 4MB. I am aiming for the 2MB Telkom Uncapped month-month option. The exchange is about 1.5 km away. There is a Telkom box on the corner, about 500m away from my house. Should there be any problems to get 2Mb? There is enough said on MyBB about this. Search for it

4. Telkom allows the option for the D-Link DSL-2750U Router ,N300 Wireless ADSL2+ Modem and Billion 810VNTX. There will be 8 devices running on Wifi at any point? Which modem / wifi router should I take? Any recommendations for another model / make? Interesting, Telkom Direct stores sell the about mentioned. I'm going with the D-Link, as it seems to be the correct setup for my house. Yes, you can buy them once off at the store

Some other tipbits:

1. We went to Telkom Direct. It was quick and simple. Took us about 10 minutes to apply
2. Two days later (with a public holiday inbetween), it is now confirmed that installation will happen next week Wednesday. Yes, 1 week. I'll believe it if I see it.

I will keep this up to date as it progresses.

Hi There,
Getting Telkom out to check the wiring to your unit is the first thing to do. If you have a Telkom line then you should be good to go.
I am not sure what the self install option is from Telkom so I would spend some time with them understanding it.
In terms of router it is probably cheaper long term for you to buy your own.
The only plus with the ones from Telkom is if it gets hit by lightning in the first 2 years they will generally replace it at no cost to you.
Choices are extensive. I run about the same number of devices you indicate off a tp-Link and not having any issues. Netgear is also a good option to consider but usually costs a bit more.

I don't think you will have any issues with getting 2MB.

Have you looked at what Afrihost and other ISP's can offer? They may save you some money. I have used Afrihost to manage the line as well as an ISP and it takes the ISP says its the line and Telkom says its the ISP issue.

Regards

Tim
