ADSL intermittent disconnects

Well my problem is still only in offpeak times, 7pm-7am and through the whole of the weekend. Ive given up trying to ask telkom for help, ive been lanning at a friend whenever i want to play games.

The explanation that makes the most sense is too many adsl connections in the area overusing the telephone line to the exchange. Thus why the problem only occus in offpeak times when everybody is at home download/browsing/checking email. This is also why my connection is very unstable and gaming is impossible during offpeak times.. My internet is still fine for browsing and downloading, since i dont need a 100% stable connection for those things.

The weird thing though is my line was perfectly fine the whole of last year.

FML!!

Well at least you have had a techie at your house. I still phone them everyday and ask for a status update, and all they say is, "it still needs to be assigned to a technical guy", they will let me know as soon as that is done. So then I ask them to reset my port and then it works fine for just a while longer.

Though, I have noticed that on Tuesdays there is absolutely no problem (which I find weird). And the rest of the time between about sevenish and midnight I disconnect about an hour (sometimes 2 hours) after establishing the connection.

My line has never been fine and I've been phoning them from the 6th of January, plus telkom even closes my logged faults without contacting me. (in fact I've had a call from a guy doing a survey on the service I have received from Telkom)

seems they fixed the problem internet hasnt disconnected for 2 weeks now apart from jumpy speeds sometimes. Its working great now not sure what they changed

Mine still disconnects .. i gave up on trying to explain to them, i just wait for the hour or so until it connects again :(

Seems like they fixed whatever was wrong. Didn't have so many disconnects the past week (only 2 if I recall correctly).

The funny thing is....Telkom says they didn't do anything, my ISP didn't do anything and I certainly didn't either. So if this happens again, do I just phone them and say do whatever you did between the 5th and 8th of February 2010? (Weird how it resloves itself almost excactly a month since I started logging faults).

I had this problem about a year ago, internet disconnected and reconnected, phone line died also in that time. Eventually they figured it to be the connection to the house thst needed to be changed can't remember exaclty but it was to do with with point of connection being corroded or rotting away. But the sorted it out in a week or so. I had Two adsl techies and to phone techies come to me every day for a week.

Best bet for all of you guys is tell them to replace the point of connection and the cables that should sort you out.

You must definitely check your line dude. This sounds like a telkom problem.

I've had the same issue since last year, somedays its bad other days not so bad, had telkom techies come over both were not able to fix it and one telkom guy even fit a new filter in exchange for old PC parts.

Bottom line telkom sucks.

BTW this is not an OS issue, I use a mac and windows.

Well Telkom finally found the problem

Our area's DSLAM cant handle all the BW going through it, strange why it just capped suddenly this year January, would think it will gradually deteriorate.

Anyway an telkom specialist put in a request for our DSLAM to be upgraded, possibly to this new ADSL2 thing.. how long this will take is another story.

I might have the same problem with our DSLAM, disconnects frequently at around prime-time 4-8pm but late night it is fine.

@Arcane....mmm, I wonder if that is my same problem. My line seems fixed at the moment. I only have 2 to 3 disconnects every other day. Which area are you? If you don't want to post it on the forum can you pst me?

Oh, ok. That's no where near me though....so it seems to me that it may be a national issue?

Unfortunately it seems like I spoke to soon as well. I'm disconnection like crazy since the 16th. But this time round I phone them on each and every disconnect and now I get sms's updating me on the fault and I had 2 or 3 calls from technical representatives.

Just an update

I have replaced my DLink-DSL-504T router with a Dlink-DSL-2540U and that sorted out my disconnects. It seems as though the 504T was not compatible with windows 7 (I've been connected for 3 days now and no disconnects).

Hope this info helps some of you with the same problems.
