Hi forumnites

I'm wondering if anyone else has the same problem or if someone has a solution (or another resource I can try) for me.

I've been experiencing a HUGE problem since I got ADSL. (I used to be on Vodacom 3G and had almost next to none problems).

I have phoned Telkom (done everything they said), browsed countless of forums (done alot they said), but yet to no avail.

Problem: I get disconnected every hour on the hour since initial connection to the internet. The best I got was 1hr18mins till disconnect.

Computer Specs:
Intel Skyburg Motherboard
Intel Core Quad CPU @ 2.33GHz
4 GB Ram
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Intel(R) 82567LF-2 Gigabit Network Connection
Nvidia GTX260 GPU
ADSL = 384
ISP= WebAfrica (Unshaped Account)

Hope thats all info you need.

Thanks in advance,
Rabid

Sounds like you need a Tech to check your line.
Phone telkom and tell them there is a line fault.

Hi BLaZor2

I have phoned them...they reset my connection and ran quite a few tests on their side and everything seems to be ok by them. Yet I lose connection as soon as there is alot of traffic on my connection.

mmm, dont know...What is a DSLAM port? I've come across that word alot but I don't know what that means. I'm supposed to disconnect in 17 mins. If that happens I'll give them a ring again.

Thnx for the advice. :D

DLSAM port is the port at the exchange. It's where you get plugged into the Telkom monopoly. It could be that you are unable to sustain voltage at the current sync speed... but it's 384 so that can't possibly be the issue, so mostl likely you just have a faulty port, as mentioned. Telkom has to fix this..

Thanks froot

How do I go about this...withouth pissing the techie of when I'm speaking to him/her? (Few of them know their stuff and the rest of them speak to you like an illiterate).

I can (mostly) help myself around a pc. Just get a bit aggrivated if they start by saying: "ok in the bottom left hand corner of your screen, yada yada yada. Oh yes I know where my start button is....

Edit: @ Froot - love your sig

Just tell them you think it's a fault at the DSLAM. If it's not a problem at the exchange or your pc, it must be between the both.

An intermittent connection could also be caused by your Line Attenuation and S/N ratio. Phone telkom and ask them to do a Line Attenuation test on your line.

Hi there

I've been having the same problem, i just dont disconnect completely. When my line is idling i get constant ping replies from local websites, but as soon as theres a bit of traffic my line becomes unstable. This is probably fine for browsing / dling, but i mainly use my internet for gaming, and this is completely unplayable with a lot of packet loss, not always showing on the pings but ingame it spikes like mad. Local / international give the same results. Oh yes and the problem also only occurs in "offpeak" times 7pm-7am and weekends.

Ive been at telkom for the last 2 weeks

First they came out to test my line, saying my LA (15-20) and Snr (35-40) is fine.s
Then they changed me to another dslam port at the exchange. Didnt help
Then they checked if my exchange is overcrowded. Which they say is not.
Then they told me to use unshaped, but unshaped doesnt have any influence on local games.
SIGH

I'm miserable, really dont know what else to do. It would seem that they've done every test there is to do and nothing helped.

PS. We recently moved to a new house and had new internet installed, the internet was fine for 3 months and this problem just suddenly occurred somewhere in the first 2 weeks of January.

Same thing happening to me.... telkom say there is nothing wrong with my line. Bought new POTS filters but thats wasn't the problem either. Telkom SUCK!

Thanks for the replies. It looks like a Windows 7 issue at the moment. I just read somewhere that they did fix it over the weekend, but I wasn't at my pc after the previous post. (I will look at it today after work). If that doesn't fix the problem I'll give Telkom a ring again and ask them to do a Line attenuation and SNR test.

Do you think I should ask for an upgrade on my line speed to 512? Or should I get the 384 line working 100% first?

I'll keep this thread updated if I find a solution, or if I run into any new problems concerning this issue.

Please post here if the windows 7 problem fixed it, i also got win7 about 1.5 months ago.

Some routers just cant hold and drops. I can recommend a billion.
Similar problem I had resolved by the phone wall jack it was a bit "faulty" made sure my connection from the phone jack to the pcand router was perfect. It could be many things :-)
Try new cables to from router pc and from the pots / wall jack.
You should also rest IE after using a 3g and rest winsock and tcp/ip in the cmd, double check settings on the router or maybe its faulty.
Either way one of them should work I hope good luck!

Ok, after phoning telkom a number of times (and also playing tennis like some other forumnites mentioned), I found out that my line was not synching. The guy I spoke to said it would be an eight hour turn around (<--he's being kind of optimistic isn't he?). But anyways, how do I reset IE and winsock I think I did the tcp/ip reset from the windows forums (using cmd prmpt).

And then another thing, if it is the synching wouldn't it be like that all the time and not only in "peak" hours?

I have the same disconnection thing here, or almost the same. The line is running fine, then for some reason it just drops, that can be when I am working or when the line is idle. Then it stays down for, sometime 30min sometimes 7hours.
I know the call center ppl by name now, and I presume they are getting tiered of me, but as soon as the line drops and stays down, I call them.

The tecki was here a few times but he says all is well on my side.

I explained to him that we had a spell of lightning a while back and that is where it all started. The lightning got my modem and network card, so I had to get new equipment, I did the self test and all is well on my side.
Today when the tecki came out I tried to explain to him the lightning might have got the exchange I a very light way (like it did my pc) but he just shrugged it off, packed up all his stuff, told me all is good on my side and left.

Two hours after he left, it happened again :(

So I am quite lost, I have win7 as well.

kimbo where you live cause once in a few days also get same problem and wont connect for few hours and techies say everythings fine here also and we did also had very close lightning strike and replaced router

btw i use vista

I really think it might be the lightning, i mean it did not kill my pc, why cant it just hit the exchange like a little, just half fry something.

I can help myself around a pc, and i replaced the x-over cable between the router and the pc, replaced the phone cable, the one from the wall socket to the router. (that was before i asked them to send out a techi)

But to have the techi test it hahah, that is another story
