Presumably if it's over 100% it means that people are able to select multiple methods of internet access in the survey. If the percentage dropped like that in 2013, it probably just means that more people were added who only connect via their cellphone and that would decrease the "percentage" if you tried to add up raw percentages.

Also really need to bear in mind the magic of misleading statistics. Smartphones and the huge strides that the cell phone companies have made in making data accessible to the majority of South Africans will naturally increase the overall internet user base that would make the proportion of users on ADSL look smaller (effectively stagnant). Yes, that's not to excuse Telkom, but they dropped the ball sometime in 2004 and it rolled under the couch and they haven't figured out how to pick it up.
 
These stats doesn't seem well. How on earth did the amount of Dial up users go up? What about the amount of Wifi users?

hmmmm - i suspect the MWEB shaping drove some people back to dial-up - it is obviously still quicker :D

*ahhhh remember the days of using telkom long call specials during weekends for free internet :D*
 
The article doesnt mention that cable theft has alot to answer for. Especially since wireless takes advantage of clients/people who lost their lines. Telkon doesnt replace lines afterwards.

+1 or people that have ADSL in the house but they connect via wifi so they choose wifi.

There is no other Internet Connection yet in South Africa which can compare for the general consumer to the stability of ADSL.
If you can afford a business fibre connection then you are fortunate!

I think that much of the WiFi access figure should be included in the ADSL one. Most of the WiFi connections are probably going via an ADSL router.
 
In effect i've measured

I think news24 uses "effectivemeasures", and what I knew about them is that I block their measures without really trying. Now that I know that their sum is bigger than the whole of the parts, I wonder how effective they really are.

Neither, the numbers don't add up to 100%, so you cannot do a year on year comparison. Real numbers would help as you can then see how the sample changed.

My second comment was pointed at wondering how many people don't really know the underlying technology of their internet connection. My parents connect to a wifi router in their house, that is their "internet". If they don't know that the router connects to the internet via ADSL they might choose "wifi" as their source of internet, skewing the statistics.

Personally I think ADSL is the best high usage internet connection you can get, unless you are fortunate enough to be able to afford fiber. However I can see how the ADSL numbers will be slipping as it is just too expensive for low usage users.
 
I would suggest that a large number of people completing what ever questionnaire used here didn't understand. IE ticked wireless when they use a wireless ADSL router or 3G router?
 
Wow some really really useful info right there. I suppose wifi was for people using hotshots but in turn has been selected by ADSL users.

Generally the non technical majority refer to their home ADSL as "WIFI" as this is how they connect.
 
I'm sure they sampled every single internet user in South Africa to definitively conclude market share has declined...How big was the sample anyway? They failed to mention that part?
 
While the numbers could be disputed I believe the conclusion that ADSL market share HAS decreased and will continue to do so in South Africa.

And I don't mind...

As Paul Hjul posted recently, Telkom should disinvest from non-viable ADSL areas (small dorpies, etc.) and focus their investment on the viable urban areas where the demand exists for better DSL offerings.

Non-viable areas should be serviced via LTE or 3G.

I do concur that ADSL market share has declined but by a claim of more than 10% is just utter crap imo.
