ADSL is dying (globally)

Now, redo this article with specific reference to South Africa. To me, this means sweet blue f-all. I know for a fact we wont get FTTH for at least another 5-10 years, if ever. (Quote direct from Telkom). Heck, we dont even get VDSL.

Also, Telkom ADSL in particular is pathetic with their ASSIA and crappy service. My friend in the UK actually enjoys the DSL over there.

^^This

... isn't it about time we had articles which are relevant to the state of broadband in SA?

Which management system do those UK companies use?

You cannot blame ASSIA for the problems at Telkom. The sytem is bringing to the fore the issues with their network, especially the last mile copper access network!

ADSL will be with us for a good while yet .
If telkom had of done the planning properly and implemented the VDSL roll out in the 3 years they said they would, their revenue and subscriber base would have grown instead of declining .
Just a simple changing of the UMCs would have made a big difference .
Dilly dallying gets you no where .
Proper planning is key to success.

ADSL is dying

Copper-based broadband access – most notably ADSL – is rapidly declining, while FTTH is showing excellent growth.

Came here to say exactly this^

I think you're expecting too much...

Will still be used i SA for 30 years with a cap of 3gb

I'm not so sure. Telkom has always hated ADSL. They have always seen it as a grudge investment. Ironically, ADSL is where they have a monopoly (due to the last mile access), yet they are more interested in playing in the LTE and Fibre markets where competitors have been successful.
Telkom has no interest in investing anymore in ADSL so if a DSLAM is full or there are issues with your ADSL, they'd rather drive you to one of their other products.

I don't know what Telkom are doing. Surely it's cheaper and quicker to upgrade ADSL in areas that already have ADSL and roll out Fibre to new areas first?

One of these days Telkom will be ready to offer us brand new technologies like ISDN and dial-up....

Telkom can still implement fiber on the existing Copper lines (poles / underground), this makes the implement of fiber much cheaper and at short times.

thank you captain obvious.

I should start a thread stating that CRT monitors or LCD is or has died or, the telegram, or something else that's reaching 'EOL'

ADSL just never took off here as it should of because the teleco's did not want LLU to happen in SA, it meant less profit for them because of competition causing a saturated market.

not a surprise...hence we have cancelled telkom...legends connect wireless link will be up and running by the 1st june.
