Origin / Problem
My connection problem started around the 10/11th of January. I do a lot of online gaming, and this seems to be the only place I pick up the problem.

Noise
I can hear noise on my phone line when using it, but dont know if it can cause this much trouble. Is it possible for a line to suddenly just get "more noise"?

Connection
On idling i ping local sites 50-55 with spikes of 80-100 regularly and the odd timeout every now and then, previously this was constant 49-51 with no spikes or timeouts.

Gaming
Whenever im in a game and the amount of BW rises due to ingame activity, my line freaks out, with several spikes of 200+ and timeouts. In World of Warcraft this only happens when doing 10/25man raids but cause 3000+ ms ping when clearing mobs, but immediate disconnects on raid bosses or even when getting close to a boss. I also cannot log back in until the boss is cleared ingame.

While playing dota, i can feel constant spikes, sometimes for 2/3 sec it will "pause" and then flood everything that happened in that time at once.

Line Speed
I have a 384k line, download speed varying between 10-35kb/sec.

Tests
I tested this problem on 2 different pcs, 2 routers, different isp's, tried using a different telephone wall socket to connect through. None of this helping the line's condition. I dont know what else to test.

Telkom
I did a fault report on the telkom website last week Thursday, the guy phoned me Saturday and said he will look into it, but nothings changed. I complained again today.

Solution?
Do u think the line will be fixed if they can sort out the noise? Also what will need to happen for them to fix the noise on the line?

Regards
Arcane

If there's noise on the line then that's very possible the problem. Can you post your ADSL line stats shown in your router?

Did you log the call as a ADSL fault, or noise on your voice line?

As a ADSL fault, i didnt know at the time that it was noise, but when i replied on their email today i told them about the noise and asked them to fix it first.

Hi Arcane,

I am not sure if you remember the massive Durbanville power outage around that time you said. I know that I saw electricity infrastructure being dug up and loads of Eskom vans along the roads.

My line us always unstable after power cuts and have since given up calling each time for a port reset, etc only to have it last until the next power cut a few weeks later.

No i dont remember it , but thats only because i was away on holidays. :/
Okay so a port reset should fix it?

That usually fixes it for me but it also naturally gets better with time. During hot days there seem to be many manual resets, etc so I don't think their equipment is well kept after.

Howdy,

I've got the exact same problem and unfortunately have been dealing with this for 6 months!

Telkom is now seriously looking into the problem (pappa het hard gepraat:D), but...no progress...they just don't know wtf is going on....sigh....

If you can, do the ping test in business hours and I bet you, it'll be 100% perfect then.

My opinion, the exchange to backbone connection (or where ever it goes) is congested, since the problem (for me) only appears after hours when everyone's at home backing up the internet.

If you manage to get this resolved, I'd really like to hear about it.

Well yesterday i called over friend to finally test if its not my equipment / setup, he brought his laptop and router. At first it looked fine, but after a hour of gaming, the internet started deteriorating again with heavy spikes and packet loss. Seem to start just b4 7pm. Dunno if time has anything to do with it, or if its just that the line can only be stable for a certain period b4 deteriorating.

Wow what coincidence about the time frame. :o

The irony, when our internet is suppose to improve because of less traffic on the web, it actually gets worse. :/ FML

Would u know if upgrading my line to 4mb would fix the problem?

I seriously doubt it will help upgrading the line.

All you can do really is to phone them every other day and check the progress of the fault.

Also, I don't think a 384 line is the best for raiding(25) in WoW. There is a crap load of data being transferred. Specially by some mods.

Well i was perfect all of last year, only time i dced often was in onyxia25.. Did icc25 first wing 2/3 times before christmas, toc25 a million times before icc came out, without any disconnects with pings of 300-500 on unshaped WebAfrica.

The problem i have appeared out of nowhere 2 weeks ago and now i cant even do toc10 without dcing. Really strange :/

Same Problem

Hi guys, I live in Pierre van Ryneveld in Pretoria and i am experiencing the same problems mentioned above. I think the problem is that the exchange is too busy :/ I normally had a latency of 19 ms, then it went up to 50 ish, and now it is just f**********ed :/ ATM i can bearly browse the web with a nice local latency of :

Pinging gam.co.za [196.35.164.204] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 196.35.164.204: bytes=32 time=282ms TTL=117

Ping statistics for 196.35.164.204:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 282ms, Maximum = 381ms, Average = 331ms

Loving it :/

Tests were run on a 4 meg line and 384. Both at different houses in Pierre van Ryneveld :/ Different routers and PCs. This is definitely an area issue
I have had this issue for about 3 months. I did call telkom and every time they send out a technie to check my line (which is fine because it was checked 3 times) :/

Wow ok, those latencies are a bit high! Test another ISP and see what happens, but the problem should lie with Telkom. It happens sometimes, happened to me before two years ago when they had a local problem

Hey Metalspawn.

I'm also in Pierre van Ryneveld !

And of course also experience the exact same problems.
Had a latency of 15ms, then it went up to 40 and now its also just vrot!

I also think the exchange is overloaded and I also think that Telkom would never acknowledge that :( :( :(

I tried that, in stead of using a SAIX based account, I used a IS based account and the results were the same :( :(

Hey

Well a telkom technician came out to my house yesterday, testing the line and such, and declared everything to be fine. I then told him that my line only degrades after 6.30pm. So after chatting a while and confirming that the issue occurs on different ISPs, he told me what he can do is go to the local box and change/replace my dslam and that I must test my line again that night.

Tested the line yesterday evening, but the problem still persist.

Heres my SnR / LA over 1 day 10 hours, im assuming it takes the current SnR and LA, this was taken at 7am today, im sure its worse at night, ill post another one tomoz. But its clearly lower than before with quite a few errors.

Mr. JAX a techie is busy switching me over somewhere ( My dad answered the phone and he couldn't really hear what the techie said). Lets see if it improves for me/us. I will let you know.
