Adsl latency issue still pending: Centurion

So there is more people wher I live with the same problem. Ever tried playing a FPS with that latency...IT SUCKS!!.

Anyway I do have good news here. There is plans in the pipeline for an upgrade of the equipment at Heuweloord exchange to provide more bandwidth for the DSLAM. Equipment for the upgrade will be available on 31/05/2010 and then it has to be installed, configured and put into service.

All in all it looks like we should have our service running at optimal speed again somewhere in June 2010.

Great news, if everything goes to plan then.
I stay in Heuweloord and have been speaking with the Telkom fault department more then I speak to my girlfriend.(and I love my girlfriend) :)

Last year I also moved from a 384kb line to a 4mb, shaped to unshaped with the hope to resolve this issue but nothing changed.
I'm just so "bummed" and sick and tired of having to be competitive on online gaming with this service that we're experiencing.

The equipment upgrade that you're referring to - is there any service/fault report number available that we can use to follow up on this project with Telkom?

Unfortunately I can not provide you with those details as they are confidential but feel free to PM me if you need any information. What games do you play online as a matter of interest.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who suffers with such problems.
I'm on the same exchange and I have been fighting with my ISP and telkom for months now, and they kept on telling me that there is nothing wrong, yet with latency of up to 15k in WoW and erratic ping tests to www.google.com there is definitely something wrong.

Just annoying that no one on there side can actually tell you this.

Lets not go there hey....Try to explain the term latency or just mention the word and the answer on the other side is "how"...

I thought my latency of 290ms was bad in a FPS but damn 15k...how do you actually play a game with that ping..I guesse you mesure your game performance in Seconds per Ftrams (SPF) and on Frames per Second (FPS).

how do you actually play a game with that ping.

That's the problem you can't.. lol.

What seems to happen is can login and the latency is "normal" (avg of 400ms), which is reasonable and works well.
Then as soon as go into a high population zone (a raid or city) the latency spikes and goes erratic - often causing timeouts.

Explaining that to an ISP was near impossible, because on there side they see your internet as working and speed is "normal"

I know not all ISP's may be like this but just from my personal experience over the last few months

What i did to fix the problem -> Try and speak to a network manager / tech / etc. and tell them the whole area has an issue (not just your line) . Then ask to be moved to another rack in the dslam and check if it solves the issue , if not keep the fault open, after a few days it will go to someone who knows what you are talking about and hopefully he will help you (which was not the case, the guy blamed me because my attenuation was 11 (according to him that is bad, fudging idiot) ) so after i tried again someone smart actually restructured the DSLAM and everything is fixed (for now) :P

I'm going to try that now and see what half assed response I get back, usually they don't seem very clued up them selves.

I was just wondering, at the moment I am on a 384 line, if I had to upgrade to a 512 / 4mb would these connection issues lessen at all?

What games do you play online as a matter of interest.

Currently I only play Heroes of Newerth (HON, as I don't think you'll be able to play any fps games) - in the past ( a month ago) I could phone Telkom to reset my line and I would have a normal ping of 50 - 70 for that evening (with an unstable ping again the next morning, so same process of resetting), but lately the line reset has no effect.

Currently my ping will jump from 100 to 150 to 250 and back so you do play with a lot of frustration
From my experience, the latency was bad, but it went from bad to worst after there was a bulk fault due to damaged cables in the Heuweloord area.(think this was during July, August last year)

I received various calls from the on-site Technician that the cabling were so old that it started to "rot away" - in my opinion this is not only an exchange issue but I'm starting to wonder if they did a proper job in fixing all faulty cables with the initial bulk fault.

What irritates me most is that Telkom won't advise users who want to apply for a Telkom line or upgrade to a 4mb line in this area, that at the moment they are unable to deliver this service.(and will take $ with open hands)
In my opinion Telkom is currently in breach of contract.

Is that local or international games?
When I last tried HoN a few weeks back I was getting around 400-900

Ye, I completely agree, as I said earlier what annoys me the most is no one even bothers to tell you these things, I have spoken with numerous techies and they say things are fine.
If it wasn't for post's like these would be rather clueless still

I have also requested that they check my line for corrosion as well (though this request was logged mid Feb and again beginning of May - no response yet), do you think it's still worth following up on that?

If any body can get through to the correct contact person (as listed above) try to get an email adress so we can send them constant updates from this forum - this is prove that there's alot of us being afffected by the same issue - 10 of us going at Telkom is better then 1

Is that local or international games?

On local servers only

Going forward I think it would be best if we all refer to the same issue and let Telkom know that all of us are being affected by this (upgrade of the equipment at Heuweloord exchange to provide more bandwidth for the DSLAM)

Everyone that are being affected by this issue in the Centurion area, please pm me your Telkom phone number followed by your physical address so that I can forward this on to the head of the fault department. This is not about you or me but about all of us.

Telkom technicians do not test for latency. Full stop.

Done :), thanks for taking the initiative with this.

A bit off topic, but in your guys opinion's is it better to get the line via Telkom or some one like Mweb?
My current line is through iSat and I've had enough of there excuses and looking into changing as soon as possible

You can only get an adsl line from telkom (mweb and all other company's are only selling lines on behalf of Telkom), so you can only change your ISP (Shaped or Unshaped Bandwith) - but if your line is stuffed it doesn't matter which ISP you pick.

So the only option according to me to avoid Telkom would be to go wireless (Neotel, Vodacom 3G) - I heard the speed is not so great, but currenly I'm getting a 90 ping on Vodacom 3G compared to 200 on my adsl

Hi all I've opened a new fault for the Centurion area that will be directed to high level support - when you contact Telkom (0800 375 375) please refer to 416CTK130510, provide them your Telkom number and advise that you're experiencing the same fault and would like to be part of the same solution.(remember to advise that this needs to be directed to high-level support or a network manager)

I advised that our dslam in our area are overloaded and that users need to be moved to a new rack.
