I am currently on wireless with an ISP i am very happy with.

The only problem being with all the cloud schooling and 3 kids the bandwidth is getting a bit sparse on this 6Mb package. I was looking at upgrading but in a similar price range which had me looking at RAIN's 5g. The number of complaints that even a normal google search comes up with on that has basically killed that idea though.

Then in today's Mybroadband news letter I see Afrihost's new PureDSL which seems to fit all the criteria plus reviews on Afrihost is in general very good.

Now i am just left wondering, isn't Telkom discontinuing support for the ADSL infrastructure? How can Afrihost offer a new product using ADSL and if i do sign up, how long will it actually be around for?

I'm guessing there's no Fibre in your area? Fibre packages are quite affordable if its available to you.

Here is the dirty little secret of fibre, unless you are in a relatively rich neighborhood you are probably not gonna get it..... ever. And almost all these neighborhoods are in cities.

Correct, no Fibre in my block/street. Though interestingly enough one block up in the main road there is Fibre. To all the businesses at least. Im in Pretoria so one would think getting Fibre would be easy. The coverage map here looks like someone spilled coffee, just drops here and there and im not in one of the drops.

If you are far from an exchange, you will not see high speed on adsl. Unless your exch can do that other name, which I forgot now.

Exchange is the box in the street like the transformer for electricity? If yes, that is like 2 houses down and across the street from me so not far away. Though a couple of years back before i got the wireless i was trying to get the Telkom ADSl deal and there was something wrong with the exchange which they had to fix. Took so long i eventually cancelled the deal and went wireless. Best of all the Telkom Service centre is literally behind this exchange. For all i know its still down.

Pinetown a rich neighborhood? (maybe I'm showing my privilege here...)

Also I think I was just lucky to have Fibre installed before the mafia started their $chitt.

Yeah, not so much hey..

I'm starting to think the Fibre ISP's are too afraid to dig for cabling in the street in front of Telkom's offices.

But seriously though, the Afrihost DSl would be the 10mb line and the wireless im on is 6mb. but speedwise would it make a difference switching to DSL? If the DSL is only gonna be working until the first breakdown/cable theft which could be tomorrow then it doesnt make much sense to switch. rather tough it out with the wireless then

Dsl will work better, i got 40mps naked vdsl activated the other day.

Remember you need have landline installed all ready, they not installing new lines just activating current ones.

The previous owners had a landline, the wire ripped off from a tree coming down some time ago but the wire is still bunched up in the corner. there was some issue between the echange and the lilttle box on top of the pole back when the Telkom dude was here

Hmm might not install, depends on how techie feels. My guy did go up on phone to reconnect the line and then activated the port.

Also, Afrihosts website says "

  • DSL Installation
  • Openserve will contact you to install your DSL line at your premises. This can take up to 14 working days.

THere is 2 lines here. 1 was the one that was ripped off (from the pole in the left hand corner) the one for the pole in the right hand corner is still connected, that was the one the Telkom tech was working with back then. The problem was between the exchange and that box on top. he never did explain what the exact problem was only that they needed to fix it on the exchange side.

it might be safer to get order from telkom rather than afrihost.

Telkom will go up and fix the line etc, afrihost will just try and activate the port.

That is an option. Though truth be told i prefer the month to month that Afrihost has over the 24 Month contract with Telkom. Too many past bad experiences with Telkom service (or lack there of) as well.

Also the possibility of the service suddenly becoming unavailable if there happens to be a cable theft which is not replaced is also a huge drawback
