My wife moved her computer and desk into the family room so that we can spend more time together. Our adsl jack is still in our office. I know it would be better to have Telkom move the jack to the family room but I can't justify the R750 quote that I got from Telkom to have it moved.

Question is, would it be better to get a 3m phone cord extension and place the router/modem in our family room or would it be better to leave the router/modem in our office and run a 3m network cable from there to her computer? Or should I leave the modem/router in the office and get her a wi-fi card for her computer?

She does game on the weekends and I do downloads at night(I have wi-fi so not an issue with me) so I would really like to keep the adsl speeds that we are getting.

Thanks

I would suggest the network cable since she games and would want a low latency. The phone extension would work fine but sooner or later, you might get a looser/poor connection with the jack thus increasing your attenuation.

I use a telephone extension cord with no noticeable side effects on a 10Mb line.

I also use Ethernet cables: it's pretty much a toss-up.

OTOH do you have a telephone handset on the ADSL line ? Has that moved to the family room ?

Put a longer Ethernet cable easiest and wont interfere with the ADSL connection.

Longer network cable. 3 meters is not much and won't cause you any loss of latency or speed.

Although you phrased it as "more time together" maybe the issue should be more "quality" time together. Her being on her computer in the family room does not for more "quality" time make. It may make for less "quality" time if she is gaming.
ProTip: Playing solitaire requires all your concentration and a distracting family in the background has caused many arguments in our household.

Thanks all for the tips!

As for time together. She only games on the weekends when she has time. She is a deputy head at a high school so on most nights from after 7:30pm she is doing work until about about 12am. She says she is lonesome in our home office. At least now we can both chat without one of us getting up to walk to the other room to have a conversation.

Just move the router and extend the phone cable.

1. Phone cable is thinner and easier to work with than network cable.
2. Cable is always better than wifi when it comes to latency.
3. You will not notice any difference when adding 3m of cable.
