Last month I did a outdoor transfer - moved my adsl line to another house, literally about 200m away. I get my Telkom bill now and they've charged me R400 odd for ADSL installation and R300 for the transfer.

I know I'm being screwed big time but is this right??? I'm just about ready to go and bomb the local telkom office!!

I'm sure i can dig up some tnt from somewhere....

I was going to be charged the same amount for an "indoor" transfer (moved from one flat to another in the same building). Because of this they said they would need to charge me R700 (thread here). BUT when I moved before they never charged me a cent. It seems they don't actually know themselves what they should charge.

To avoid getting charged R700, I just cancelled the line and asked for a new one in the new spot. They never charged me for it because when I ordered the line, the 2nd line is free. Then I did a self install for DSL which was done in 2 days (thread here) and it was of course free. So if this happens to you again, do what I did and you won't pay a cent.

Holy cow! What a mission, but wish I'd known that before. I dont think telkom will let me off the hook though, but I'll phone them and query the amount. Its not like I can refuse to pay - they will just cut me off :(

I always phone telkom several times before I want to do something to get the whole story. Based on that you make your call on what to do. I have moved 3 times in the last 2 years so I know what they are like and each time I have had a DSL line. So it's a double mission. There's always a loop hole that you can make use of. You just need to ask the right questions to figure it out. You must just call them well in advance.

ummm dude just be happy telkom did not cancel your line and make u wait 6 months

pay the 700 bucks and move on, there is nothing you can do about it

Just got off the line from Telkom. I'm impressed - they're going to cancel the adsl installation fee - it shouldn't be there. Only the R300 for the transfer should be paid! :)

Hmmmm....

I just moved...paid nothing to cancel my line. Re-applied with closer plan 5 again, paid nothing for line installation - and nothing for ADSL (self install), took about a week and everything running smoothly.

Why they charging you R300?

For the transfer of the line. I'm happy to pay to R300 - I aint going to fight abou t it. Next thing they change their mind about the R400 :)

obviously you pay nothing to cancel a line. But when you applied for the new line, was the other line on your bill still and in the process of being cancelled? if so then the 2nd line installation is free.

Just got another call from Telkom. They're cancelling both charges. The only downside is I must pay the entire amount now and they will credit me next month.

that's standard telkom practice. I had to do the same cos it wasn't within the next billing month or something. there are no ifs or buts on their system.
