I had ADSL many years ago - but have been using 3G for over 4 years now. Unfortunatley - I'm *possibly* moving in a few months to a place without reception and I've made it clear that broadband is a concern.

I'm not sure of any developments that have occured in the past few years - so please bear with me :/

I'm looking at Northriding - which I know is a huge area for apartments - so wondering if anyone in that area can tell me if it's available or if there is a site I can check? How do I know where the exchange is or how far?

What are the costs involved - is it still the line rental to Telkom (+- R100.00) and then the ADSL portion? So two portions in total?

Speeds : I've got 5GB Cell C right now and get a decent signal with torrents at 500kb/sec+ and pings on 60ms and pay roughly R250.00pm (once off). Is there a comparable package with ADSL at a simlar price?

EDIT : Oh! I remember back then there was a massive issue with getting them installed with long waits etc. Still the case?

been havin it for a few years now, never had a dropped line or jitter issues.
closest exchange is olivedale afaik, well that's where my landline comes from.
mobile data & voice can be a bit of a gamble depending on your location.
i'm on the fourways end of bellairs drive.
not sure about installation waiting times. i'm on 512, afaik 4mbps is avail, don't think 10mbps is though.

I'm getting that 1GB deal from WebAfrica + 10GB IS Local only from OpenWeb @ R70.

So it is way more expensive than the Cell C deal, but in my area the latency and signal strength of the Cell C package is just way too poor for gaming.

ADSL is expensive compared ....

BTW - with Cell C and other wireless services I get less than 50% of what is advertised - so although they say 21mbps, I get a realistic 3mbps with some bursts. Vodacom gave me about 2mbps on their 14.4 ... is ADSL similar? Would a 4GB line suffice if I'm with Cell C speed?

i was hoping someone else would have answered by now and save me from all the typing but apparently not, thanks guys :P

firstly, the promised speeds thing doesn't work quite the same way with ADSL. it basically comes down to the speed at which your modem syncs and the bandwidth supplier. the sync self is dependent on distance from the dslAM and quality of the copper. usually you get what you pay for, but if the stats aren't up to scratch you can be put on a lower profile and still pay the same.
the bandwidth, usually it doesn't matter much with a capped account -ie it's as fast as your line is but there are exceptions. IS for example severely shape p2p traffic so that you don't get full speed. as for these "uncapped" accounts, that's a whole other story someone else can bore you with... ;)

a 4GB line? don't you maybe mean a 4Mb line? dunno, if you can tell us exactly what you intend using it for the better we can answer
