ADSL or Router problem?

Could someone help me identify where my problem lies? Is it with my ADSL line or my Router? I have been experiencing disconnects for a while now but today its been very bad. When using the phone I can see when my wireless disconnects and it does the same on all the other devices in the house.

When I look at the device (router) info I can see that the running time is only 11 minutes for the device, and it has been 11 minutes since I last noticed the disconnect of the wireless on the devices in the house.

How can I tell if its a hardware problem or a line problem? I am in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town and the router is a TP link W8960n router.

Hope someone could help me with this.

Thanks

SNR, attenuation, error rates etc. google it to find out how to access it for your router. should be somewhere near the uptime

The line looks fine.

Explain this part in more detail

>> the running time is only 11 minutes for the device,

post the exact phrasing. usually routers show the uptime of the ADSL link, not the device. you posted its the device uptime. So we need to know exactly where this 11 mins comes from & what the description is. Ideally with a screenshot - because there is usually also an WLAN uptime and you mentioned wifi devices dropping.

Definitely looking like a router issue though from the info so far...

This is under device info;

System Running time: 0 day(s) 00:05:03

I have no idea what the bold part means and have searched through the router settings but cant find anything relating to that.

looks like the router is bombing out entirely taking everything down...adsl, wifi etc

does the router feel very warm if you touch it?

I have never really noticed the temp of the router so cant compare.

It is quite hotter than the tp link switch.

well routers are generally warm, but shouldn't be hot...can't make it more accurate than that im afraid...there is just this temp where i get the feeling..."oh this can't be good". switch is no good for comparison.

position it vertically (think skyscraper) and dont put it in a cupboard. some routers come with a bracket for this. not quite sure why, but this really seems to help in some cases and seems to be manufacturer backed @ brackets.

assuming the heat theory is right chances are good that you might need a new one though - if a router bombs due to heat then its either a crap router model or that particular unit is crap

try to keep accurate track of the time between disconnects in minutes...avg that out. then switch the router off for a while...say an hour...so that all the components cool down to room temp. and then remeasure. if it is a temp issue then those trials starting with a "cool" router should result in longer times until disconnect.

or if thats too much hassle just return it/get a new one. hell i got mine swoped because it bombed 6 days before the warranty expired. :D

I switched it off earlier for about 20mins and after switching it back on it took longer to bomb out so the temp theory sounds right. Think I will check the warrenty and take it in tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help, really appreciate it.

Can someone convert this to 2 digit numbers?

Edit: Attenuation does seem a bit high.

So I will have to buy a new router seeing as this one is out of warrenty. Any idea of a nice router I can get with decent specs? I am in the Cape Town area but I see esquire only has one router and it seems Uniterm Direct is not open during weekends.
