ADSL Service

Just a follow up...now that there are some others using the service (I don't know how many) I can get a better feel for the speeds. Tonight on international I'm getting 8-15KB/s bursting to 20kB/s.

Bad news is that I'm getting the same on local! Thank *** for the Firefox switchproxy extension!

I just tested it(finally got it to work) and on telkom speedtest for http I got the following results:

Telkom ADSL Speed Test Meter

Your line speed is approximately 66.2 Kbps or 8.1 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

No idea how many users on it atm.

lewsherin, will contact you later.

Everyone else, if you'd like to test the VPN server (for gaming), please PM or email me on [email protected].

The proxy test account has been closed.

What was the general comment on the service?

I guess I'm satisfied with what I've seen.

Pretty decent speeds, and I'm able to surf again after being capped.

I tried playing Everquest 2 and it was a bit laggy, but playable. Would have liked to test it some more though as I only played for about 15 minutes.

Overall: Big Thumbs up!!

Thanks for all your effort and help Bobs!!

:)

For access to international browsing, the service rocks. Difficult to rate the speeds without knowing the number of people using the service, but I would be quite happy with 10-15KB/s downloads after being capped (which is what I got yesterday). If bobs_uncle can offer that kind of service then good luck to him, the value for money seems good.

How to become a WoW gamer's favorite service :)

Hi bobs

Thanks for the call.
Thought I'd recap what I suggested to you for all forumites to comment.

Basically I think what is sorely needed is a realistic, affordable service aimed squarely at international ADSL gamers needs:

Latency: a STABLE international latency that is CONSISTENTLY below 500 ms.
Packet Loss: very low packet loss internationally....
Bandwidth: 10 kilobytes/sec minimum, burstable upwards
Cap: 5 - 10GB if it required to ensure the above two features remain.
No shaping on your side of the service.

From the above, clearly it is unlikely such a service would be abused as badly as your uncapped service will be - which is good for you, and good for us :)

To me if you can offer the above in a package at R100-150, you will become WoW gamers' hero :)

I am still awaiting my connection to be installed, but I'm sure there are other WoW ADSL subscribers that would love to test the above with you.

Hi,

In regards to lewstherin's post. We are currently recruiting members to test the facility. Thank you very much for your input.

Also, currently working on the website, you'll be able to see who is online at the current time, so that you can compare your speeds. Also, we'll be publicising our network utilization so that you as a client can see when the network is fully utilized. As a registered client, you'll be able to login to the website and check your daily usage graphs, view your email (webmail), log a support call, cancel the service as well as comment on the service (this will be publicised on the main website).

If there are any other services/features you'd like to see, please do not hesitate to post a remark, email me or PM me.

Thanks again for the great feedback. We at FreeDSL value our customers input as well as their happiness. I guess you've heard that from every other ISP.

After using the service for the whole of last night, I have to say that it would serve my needs perfectly. I'm not much on playing games online, and the browsing speeds I experienced were more than acceptable. It's also perfect for the odd "little" download.

Thanks Bobs Uncle!

Just a quick Q - if I subscribe to your service, will I have access to both vpn and proxy for same monthly rate, or will I only be able to use one of the two services?

Azrael.

If you subscribe, you are given both options in one. Your proxy account is the same for VPN. We also run a transparent caching service on the VPN node, so you'll still be going through the proxy when surfing.

Hope this helps.

Ok so, with that setup, who is willing to use this service ? First month is R250 (including the setup fee), there after is only R100 a month.

Azrael. We have people testing the VPN at the moment for the weekend. Hope to hear from them on their experience soon :)

I'd actually like to cancle the Proxy service, and just run the VPN service. But those are future ideas!

The connections to FreeDSL will be over an effective 256Kbps connections, since the maximum upstream of Telkom ADSL is 256k.
