Next year I'm moving in to a house with four of my mates, and we want to get a 3gb ADSL account to share between us. I currently have a Netgear Router DG834GT available to me to use, or I could purchase a new one, or any (cheap) hardware necessary. Okay sharing the connection is simple enough and works fine, like currently in my home. However we want to split the cap in five portions, eg. 615 mb each.. so that it is not unfairly distributed.

Is there any hardware or software, besides a linux server that may be able to do this?

I have an application DUMeter which monitors network traffic, but cannot differentiate between network traffic and ADSL, and cannot cut off the connection.

I also have an application DU SuperController (Seperate Company) which manages available speed and allows limits for each software program. I have heard of a similar program called NetLimiter.

This measures download speeds for each program so could easily record cap for each user, and then when data for month (615mb) is exhausted the speed should be throttled to 2 KB/s for example. But it doesn't. Does anyone know of any programs which could do this?

Why dont you each buy your own bandwidth and just run the router in bridge mode?

I would tear if I only had 600mb to use per month  As for the rest, google is your friend.

Can a router bridge between five accounts ... ????

I've tried google but most of the results are on limiting the speeds between computers not the cap ... because overseas they don't have to give a **** if someone in the house exceeds his cap... Haha.. yeah 600 mb not great... however none of us pirate anything right ;) so what browsing is gonna take me over that haha...

Five one gig or five hundred mb accounts would be rather expensive

Why?

Put the router in Bridged mode (pure bridged) and each person creates a PPPoE dialup account on their pc's. You buy your own bandwidth, either monthly or Prepaid, check out WebAfrica and Axxess.

hmmmmm... so when U say create a PPPoE dial up connection on the actual computer, is there where you would input the ADSL user name on each PC?

Correct - each user would enter their own ADSL account details. No details need be stored in the router.

People could then use bandwidth from any provider they wanted to. Telkom/IS/Web Africa/Axxess etc, prepaid or post.

okay that seems like a good option... just checked prices seem to be about 99 - 129 for unshaped 1GB... which is sounding good. I also saw that WebAfrica has DSL in 10GB "Group Accounts" which can be split into sub Accounts which is a good option, except 700 + line cost might be a bit steep on student budget ;)

only problem is at the end of the month if for example one or two guys have only used half their cap, then its a mission to lump it together and go on a download spree, whereas if it was software controlled, the config filecould say, for example, on last day of month, remove all restrictions...

If they opted for prepaid (as opposed to post) any unused bandwidth would carry over.

IF u want to lump it together lets say u want a 2gig file and u all just have 1gig accounts. Use a download manager on and connect with the one account then when that is capped just pause the file and connect with the next dailup connection and wam u got another 1 gig and resume your download.

This is really great I am using prepaid local only and still have over 6 gig over from last month.

yeah but that would be quite a hack to change accounts every hour or two... the prepaid option sounds the best, then each guy can control his individual usage and top up only when he needs, and he can suit his budget by choosing shaped and unshaped and his traffic limit. Sounding good. but now can this prepaid traffic get carried over indefinately??

yeah thats what I was thinking... its something like 320 for a 512 k line per month which is +- 65 bucks a month each ... plus we gotta pay like R70 or R130 depending on shaped or unshaped

Total of either
R135 or
R195 ...

What are WebAfrica and Axxess like for service??

You pay once-off for the account (I.E. a 1GB PREpaid account is R69.00 for the whole GB. - Not monthly). You have 12 months to use up the 1GB of bandwidth. And you can top-up your account with more PREpaid bandwidth at any time, if your bandwidth is running out.

yeah was just wandering how many months... I dont think current router. DG834 GT can do bridge mode... Thats a problem. But I only see it can't do half bridge mode. What's the difference between half and full bridge ?? Which will I need
