ADSL speed

Hi all

We just need to bear in mind where in the world we are "AFRICA". Ie it is pretty pointless comparing our infrastructure to places like the UK and US when it is a well known fact that one city like NYC probably has more aggregate bandwidth than the the whole of South Africa.

I agree that Telkom should not cap the service to 3GB but I fully agree with the the setup that there is no bandwidth guarentee on ADSL as it is pretty stupid to let home users eat up all the bandwidth with things like Kazaa and businesses that are willing to pay for guarenteed bandwidth like leased lines must suffer. After all businesses drive the economy.

I think Telkom should maybe look at making their diginet lines a little more affordable but where bandwidth guarentees are involved get ready to pay.

Hi douwg

Your statement :

" I fully agree with the the setup that there is no bandwidth guarentee on ADSL as it is pretty stupid to let home users eat up all the bandwidth with things like Kazaa and businesses that are willing to pay for guarenteed bandwidth like leased lines must suffer. After all businesses drive the economy. "

is only valid if Telkom tell us that ADSL is not for Kazaa ect, not take our money and then tell us. I am personally a Kazaa user, I download fan sub anime as a hobby. I was not phased by the 3 gig cap as long as the throttled international line was at least on par with my analouge modem. I would of taken the 64K ISDN rather if I knew that Telkom structured the ADSL network to cripple P2P apps.

BTW: Are you aware that Telkom utilises network shaping to prioritise HTTP/FTP/SMTP applications, so even if there was no cap Kazaa users could not abuse the system because all P2P applications would perform is a manner unusable till all traffic is minimised (from about midnight till early morning).

Diginet lines have priority access all the time, and the greater share of the international bandwidth, each type of connection has a logical international connection pipe and does not interfere with other connection types (ISDN does not pass thru the same logical pipe as Diginet or ISDN...this is how Telkom can implement network shaping on ADSL but leave ISDN and dial-up uneffected by network shaping).

Hi guys

My ADSL was quite good today…up to now that is (Friday 17:09). I just measured my speed and it is 12.56 kbits/s. Do you think it is because of home users hitting the net after a hard week’s work? Maybe looking for solutions for tomorrow’s match against the All Blacks on the net…

Sometimes these guys amaze me.
Right now I'm getting a blistering 50KB/S through Kazaa. The thing is just cruising like I've never seen before.
If it were like this all the time, I'd buy Telkom shares...

Hi Paf

I must say that this weekend has been a pleasure. Currently I even feel somewhat guilty kicking up all this fuss, but I am certain this will disappear on Monday when we are back to 10 kbits/s. I wonder if Telkom possibly upgraded the international bandwidth? Quite possible after the recent media coverage of ADSL.
hey well im still dling at 0.45k from kazaa atm im lucky if my speeds go over 1k :P

DS, strange. Unless you're capped, I don't see why you shouldn't be getting similarily good speeds.
RPM, yep, it has been good, I know what you mean about almost feeling guilty - but don't count your chickens...we know the performance we get has many peaks and troughs. I very much doubt they've done anything about intl bandwidth.

nope paf but whats weird for me i always dl at +-120k weekdays off peak hours always but only 5 ppl with adsl connected 2 my exchange and im dling from 8 users from kazaa and almost dling at 1k

oh btw it doesnt feel as if im capped cos every site still fast and i still dl fast from intl sites just outa curiosity where can i check when im capped cos im with mweb as my isp

If you're capped your IP will look something like this:

165.165.0.31
or
165.165.1.23
or
165.165.2.23

Notice the third number. It will be in the range of 0 to 2 or 3 I think.

That's what my IP address usually looks like when I'm capped. An uncapped IP address looks like this:

165.165.197.240
or
165.165.193.240
etc...

When I was uncapped I used to set Kazaa to download from 00:00 till I wake up...I used to get some good speeds (10k/s on 3 diff dl's at the same time). It all depends on how much HTTP/FTP/SMTP traffic is going on as P2P has practically the lowest priority. Just setup the stuff you want to dl and let it go.

Sunday 10 August, 10:30 am -- 345.6 kilobits/sec...

Nice and fast, I only wish it was this fast during the week. Perhaps Telkom could be so good as to release the throttle on peer-to-peer applications over the weekend??

welll im with mweb as isp and my 3rd digit = 25 and im still dling at really slow speeds from any p2p programs but from intl sites i got 150k and then all of a sudden when wanted 2 take a screenie it jumped 2 104k and stayed there but that happend on friday and thursday aswell

Hi guys

I must say that my ping times for high ports are excellent. At least 10 times better than last weekend. I wish it is like this all the time. I will change this site to a “Telkom is great” site :-)

I've been away this weekend so I couldn't enjoy this newfound, i have to believe you guys, bandwidth.

Tested this morning at 06:40 - 292.57 kbit/sec. Will check the latency as well.
