ADSL Stellenbosch issues!

So it turns out my line is now syncing at 8Mbps since Wednesday, and has been very unstable since then.

Using Afrihost's 'Tweak my line' and 'Recreate port' has not helped. Leaving the modem off for a couple of hours also has not helped...

I was having heavy packet loss and thus latency spikes during the last week. So a tech came out to "fix" things at the exchange on Monday and now my line isn't syncing at all. But apparently someone else (they even told me the username, Johan something) is connecting on my line due to some sort of f-up as a result of the "fix" on Monday. Just love the quality of our DSL in Stellies. At least the TelkomZA twitter team are fast with replies and know more about what's going on than the actual techs. Hopefully getting it sorted today with their help.

@TipTopPoet:
Was your issue sorted out?

I'm still having congestion related issues, where I'm not even getting 1Mbps between 08:00 - 22:00:

I've logged a fault with Telkom and they told me that they are now monitoring my connection for congestion - so I'll see what happens. If nothing happens, I'll just Tweet @TelkomZA again, because they always come through!

Ai, it's so sad that you cannot give a decent decription during the fault reporting :(

Like the Telkom techies probably contacted me 3-4 times and every time they came to the conclusion that they had to report it to the congestion support team.

At least today they told me that they may move the line, because moving the port on the same DSLAM didn't have any effect.
I really hope that they can sort this issue out, because getting sub 1Mbps speeds on a 4Mbps line after hours is really terrible.

Hi

Can you help me understand? I also wish to diagnose my problems (Uniepark, 021887xxx).
The main problem here is the latency in line 11, right? What does that hop represent?

And/Or everything from line 6?

I would appreciate some education.

Regards.

I think they have resolved that issue of Naks.

Congestion issues are usually indicated by the second hop.

Naks just told me that Telkom was probably just busy with network upgrades, because now he's syncing at 10Mbps and also getting full line speed in terms of download speeds!

I've gotten a response back from TelkomZA and he told me that my DSLAM isn't congested because it is sitting at like 28Mbps out of the allocated 155Mbps.
I've sent him a couple of speedtest.net and SNMP graphs, because his data and mine doesn't add up!

Hi Pada.

Got the a bit of the same story in Durbanville. My 4mb line would turn into a 1mb line in the evenings and usage graphs don't even spike above 120kB. Telkom also tells me that the dlsam is under utilised...yet my tests and investigation say otherwise. Very annoying. What's more is that the tracert's show perfect pings all round. Feels like somekind of software imposed QoS to be honest...

@Orihalcon:
My latencies and modem SNR margins are perfect.
I'm convinced that it is Telkom QoS (or something similar), because when my ISP shapes me (like what MWEB did), my browsing was terribly slow, but it still worked.
Now when I'm reaching 1Mbps, I'm actually getting packet loss and things won't even connect or open the page!

I'm going to try an old Netgear D834GUv5 (or something like that) from Wednesday evening onwards to see if it is any different than my D-Link DSL-2500U and 2640U that I've already tried.

This is what TelkomZA provided me with:
Currently there is no congestion on your DSLAM and for the past weeks. Traffic looks good , with only 18% utilization.

Uplink Stellenbosch 5
Physical Uplink Type STM1 Uplink Transport Type ATM
Physical Uplink Bandwidth 155 Mbit/s Number of E1s
Uplink Bandwidth Required 26.624 Mbit/s Uplink Bandwidth % Used 18 %

I then sent him the following graphs showing otherwise:

I'm still awaiting a reply since I sent those results.

Pada there is definitely something going on as I also only get 1mb line speeds during the evening and over the weekend when lots of people would be at home browsing the internet but my latency is fine.

I also get some packet loss. My line stats are perfect.

TelkomZA is currently looking into my issue that I've reported as congestion, but they still have no idea what is causing it, because the DSLAM isn't congested according to him.

I'll try dialing a PPPoE connection from my PC tonight to ensure that it isn't my MikroTik router(s) that is causing it, but I highly doubt that it will make any difference.

I've now also sent him a quote from Tinuva that made sense to me - although I don't understand exactly what it entails:
If you are on a congested exchange where Telkom uses an ASR instead of an ESR, the DSLAM can inform the ASR when the backhaul is congested, and then the ASR starts to rate limit all pppoe sessions going to that DSLAM, to keep latency low.

So now I've done tests by dialing the PPPoE connection from my laptop via CAT5e cable to the modem, with nothing else connected (no filters, telephones or alarm system) and I saw absolutely no change in my test results.

The only thing left for me to do now is to test with a Netgear modem instead of D-Link ones, which I also doubt would make any difference.

Telkom has reset my port, which also made no difference :(

Hi Pada.

THANK you for that quote from Tinuva. That would damn well explain what is happening to me EXACTLY!

Following this up with Telkom.

Sorry for the cross post, I see this thread is more recent. Is anyone have sync issues since the 4 -> 10mbps bump? My line stats are the same (and I still sync at 4mbps) and SNR margin down of 10 (up is 12), but every few hours my d-link 2500 drops the connection.

@strange:
My 4Mbps connection hasn't changed over the last couple of weeks. Like the SNR margins, sync speed and terrible download speeds are still the same...

The last 6 hours my ADSL dropped only 5 seconds worth of ping packets, so my D-Link DSL-2500 is pretty rock solid.

I'm still waiting on TelkomZA for more feedback on my situation which I'm confident that its congestion, which they cannot believe since their systems are telling them that my DSLAM is utilizing only like 20% of its capacity.

I think I'm going to "downgrade" to the new 4Mbps profile, seeimg that I'm too far from the DSLAM to get more that 6Mbps and our DSLAM doesn't support 10Mbps or Adsl2+ modulation yet.

Strange, I had the same issues when Telkom upgraded the lines in my area. Many port resets and modem reboots also did not help.

Eventually, the line was stable when after a couple of weeks they finished the upgrades in the area.

If you are still syncing at 4Mbps, I would suggest switching off your modem for an hour or so and re-doing the connection. Mine was also still syncing at 4Mbps and by doing this it started syncing at 10Mbps.

I'm still getting ~1Mbps on my 4Mbps ADSL line during the day. The only time that I'm getting 4Mbps is between 02:00 and 06:00.

Hi Pada.

My problem got resolved when I raised a fault with Telkom and forced them to actually investigate my dslam. They found exactly what Tinuva explained. When my dslam picked up high latency it enforced a QoS which quartered the speed of all PPPoE connections to it. By doing this it kept the latency really low - which made it seem to Telkom that no congestion was present.

Last week Monday they fixed it by upgrading the dslams back haul to the exchange. Been getting 420kB average 24/7 since then.

I honestly think you are in the same boat as I was. Ask that Telkom thoroughly check your dslam for congestion.
