On 4mb but still artificially limited to ~1024kbps downstream.

More of this issue...do you have a bandwidth monitoring tool? If so, does your bandwidth throughput look like this when speeds are crappy?

That is what mine looked like - 4mb account. Got that throttled 1mb speeds between 17:00 and 01:00. Pings were always great. My bet is congestion on the exchange causing your problem

It's terrible at the moment, pings are ok but throughput is <1mbps on a 6mbps line. (mweb 4mbps account).

Tonight and last night after around 19:00 my ping increased to >1500ms to local servers with up to 5% packet loss. By this morning it was fine, switching ISP did not fix the issue. I suspect network congestion. Anyone else experiencing the same in central Stellenbosch?

Ping Test:

ping 197.242.144.102

64 bytes from 197.242.144.102: icmp_req=1 ttl=59 time=415 ms

Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
64 bytes from 197.242.144.102: icmp_req=4 ttl=59 time=552 ms
Request timeout for icmp_seq 5

ping 8.8.8.8

64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=1 ttl=44 time=591 ms
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_req=3 ttl=44 time=680 ms

I'm still having congestion issues where its just my download speed that gets limited badly - like from 4Mbps to sub 1Mbps - and Telkom simply cannot even see that it is congestion :(

I'm in Die Boord, and not central Stb.

Currently my PPPoE connections are still unable to connect and it startes at 22:05 already. My ADSL is still synchronized at 4096/512.

I'm now having the same problem with limited speeds again. I think its because all the students are back and downloading like usual.

i was having terrible connection issues since last night (Uniepark). This morning I changed from my FNB Connect data account account to my Afrihost account and voila problem was solved!

I'm still getting sub 1mb speeds with a 4mb line. Is anyone else having problems or is it just me?

Having bad packet loss and high latency in the evenings. Think I had the same thing this time last year.

I spoke to TelkomZA and the issue is confirmed to be congestion on uplink 3. They're currently working on it.

Thanks for the info Nirv. I will keep you updated when my line acts up again. :p I'm getting the performance of a 3mb line currently at this time. It then gets progressively worse as they day goes on until around 1am.

It's a really unfortunate problem for me, since I can deal with decreased download speeds, but I absolutely can't have >100ms latency to local servers, and it only happens at the times when it matters... I just hope that the problem won't require weeks/months of waiting.

Are you still having problems? I still only get +-80kB/s in the evenings on my 4mb line.

As of last night I still had problems, very high latency. However TelkomZA messaged me this afternoon and reported that the issue should be resolved. Holding thumbs to check tonight.

It's interesting that we're having such different issues - your latency was perfect in that speed test, and for me my line speed is almost perfect but latency is through the roof. Hopefully both will be fine now.

Edit: I definitely still have issues.

Does anyone know what the problem is with connectivity in the Stellenbosch area? Looked on Mweb status notices and everything seems to be down which is serious. Has someone put a spade through the main line or what?

Hopefully they are fixing the back haul problems.
I can sync but not authenticate with any of my accounts. Now I can't work at home.

Hopefully it is up by this afternoon.
