HI:)

For the past 4 months I have been experienceing continuous disconnects with my ADSL especialy during the evenings. I have loged multiple faults to Telkom and all the techs they have sent cannot fix it. Basicaly every evening my internet disconnects ever 10 - 20 minutes, My SNR(downstream) values start strong at around 22+dB and slowly decrease till they reach 6dB - 0dB and sometimes even -7dB. It takes a few seconds for the SNR to go back to normal by itself or a router restart fixes it but then it just repeats the process. I am currently on a 4Mb line and my area supports up to 10Mb, I am also 2.6Km from the exchange.

I have test almost everything:
Tried 3 different routers
Changed all my cables
changed all the splitters and filters
Removed all the telephones on the line
Tried it on all 3 pc's and consoles
Test using only wireless devices
Turned off electrical appliances in house hold such as gysers heaters microwaves TV etc.
Tried different plug points
Used a UPS system on router
Used USB router
Ajusted internal setting on router
Used 4 different ISP accounts
Got my line speed reducesd from 4Mb all the way to 384kb line (3Mb, 2Mb, 1Mb, 512kb all tested and same problem)

Telkom has sent out techs and even a ASDL specialist and they still cant find the problem. They have done the following
Changed the cables to my property
Changed my ports and equipment at the DSLAM
Changed my ports and equipment at the exchange
Monitored for noise on my line (they say theres none)
They checked for voltage leaks on my property
They checked whether my property had enough power and correct voltage to all my plug points in my house
They checked all the cables from the exchange to my premises
They monitored for electrical interferance on the line
The techs say that if there was a problem with my line or if there was noise and interference I would be able to hear in on my telephone but my phone is clear all the time
They said that no one could be leeching of my line because its runing on a single closed circuit
Telkom says that its not due to traffic because the traffic only starts to build up at around 8pm in my area and my problem starts at around 3pm

After all the trial and error testing the problem still persists I have had ADSL for 5 years and this only started 4 months ago
If anyone has and further ideas or perhaps knows what I can do to fix this I would greatly apreciate it.

I suppose the key would be to figure out what changed 4 months ago. I'm guessing that was around the time of the 10mbit upgrade. I'd suggest you ask Telkom to check their service logs for your area around the date that your problems started, to figure out what change caused the problem. Not sure if they will agree to the request, but it's worth a try.

The fact that it happens only in the evening is strange. Perhaps someone connecting through the exchange is using an unapproved device that's causing interference on your line? I'm grasping at straws here, but perhaps if Telkom can monitor what device(s) come online around the time your SNR drops, you'll have a better idea where the problem originates.

Does your neighbours have the same problem, or are you an isolated case?

High traffic throughput (in your area) shouldn't affect your ADSL SNR margins at all, but it WILL affect latencies as well as your throughput.

From all the information that you've given, it sounds to me like someone made a fault with one of the tests, because it seems pretty much impossible to still have ADSL problems, while all of those checks/tests had favourable results.
Typically when the ADSL is acting up during the night but not during the day, then CFL's (compact fluorescent lamps) are to blamed.

Same Problem

Hey Meridian

I'm having exactly the same problems. I also have the 4meg line. I've changed routers Isp's etc.

I'm in the Fourways area, you anywhere near?

Did you find a fix?

Howsit

I'm in the Kensington area close to East Gate and unfortunaltley I haven't found a fix yet. I have thought about CFL's but how close do they have to be to the cable's or router in my house to actualy affect it and I've read that it only causes problems when they are switched on and off. I have checked my premises and the only flourecent light we have are in the garage which is a good 20 meters from my line outside and there are none in the house. The garage lights only go on at around 6pm and go off at about 11pm. My problem starts at 3pm and continues through the night.

Also what I forgot to mention is that when I lose sync it's only for a few seconds so the router's ADSL sync light doesnt break or flash it remains solid although internal reading show it has lost sync. Telkom says that they have never seen a problem like this before and that according to them, I dont know if its true but no one else in my area is experienceing problems. My neighbours are all old people so they dont have ADSL.

I have monitored it this whole weekend and from friday night it seemed pretty ok SNR was at 24dB and it didnt go lower then 12dB had no breaks or problems which was surprising, untill monday at 3pm when it started doing the same thing again.

Telkom did say that around when my problem started they were upgrading/fixing the exchange if this is the case what from the upgrade is causing this? if anyone knows

Thanks for the assistance and any other help or ideas would still be greatly appreciated:)

You cant always hear the line interference on the phone all the time. When I had line interference my phone was pretty much clear until lightning storms started which was not often to notice.

They had to replace a cable if I remember right between the exchange and dslam after complaining for like 2 years and it also affected other people in the area and they also complained but telkom did not care much.

Go 3G. It does not sound like Telkom cares...

got exactly the same problem, only for a little longer. called telkom endless times as well as axxess, cybersmart and mweb. still the same.

no solution so far. mega200wr, BiPAC 7300G RA and TP-LINK TD-W8901G. all three tests 100%.

but the disconnections continue without any solution. and very slow speeds, currently around 30kbps and having difficulty to browse today...

and when there's a storm or rain, no adsl... and no solution...

Thats the same thing I told the Telkom tech that you wont always hear the noise and I did research on it also, but when I tell the tech these things he looks at me like I'm trying to be a smart ass. The techs are full of crap honestly:mad:

You will have to find a kind hearted person at the telkom direct store who knows a techy specialist (thats how I managed to get it fixed :D)

Hi there has anybody got the solution to the sync and intermittent connection yet. i've been sitting with this for some weeks now and have not had any joy yet.

sounds like another ADSL interfering with yours
sounds like they have done every thing ( if they have done what they said )

Just keep on reporting it as a fault eventually you will get a tech that can fix it

Tried different plug points ??? do you have more than one plug point ???
Have you tried with no splitter no phones and no filters just with the modem plugged in ?
