hey guys

bit of confusion here... maybe its me maybe its telkom i dunno

my freshly installed adsl is installed and working, im almost a happy man.
however, im trying to get my adsl password and username from telkom.
they tell me its

online124****@dsl512telkomsa.net,

is that correct?
why is my webafrica user name *******@wadsl (short and sweet)

the telkom username doesnt fit into my dlink setup. its too long.

whats a normal telkom username length?

Yes, it's correct. I suggest creating a dial-up connection via XP and not save your account info to your router. You'll need to set up your router in bridged mode.

aha .... and on a mac? should be similar

Lol.

Could I suggest you try the latest firmware for your D-Link. From what I gather people around the world have complained about this to dlink so hopegully they have fixed it in a newer firmware version.

What D-Link model & Firmware version do you have?

Definitely - much easier and if you've got your router handling the connection it's also acting as a firewall.

However - its easy to do the pppoe on the mac. Let me know if you still want to do it that way.

hey ponder.... which file on that ftp is it?

What do you mean by d-link setup? Are you referring to the windows software that comes with the router to configure it?

Have you tried to do it via the web interface, 192.168.1.1, username: admin, password: admin to gain access via the web interface.

Cheers

still havent got this sorted :( im only averaglly tech savy

i downloaded the software but cant find "the firmware", all i found was the "english cd" coz i have the russion version cd that was shipped with my dsl264OU.

and the prob with the new english cd version is that it wont find the modem now, only the russion version does. even after factory reset etc

anyone know anyone from dlink?

on the SA dlink page...

and so i do... but then it cant pick up the modem anymore??

Dlink 2640U borked install wizard

So the problem is with the stupid wizard they supply on the disc, and the software from the D-link. There is however a way to get around it. What you need to do is run the wizard on the cd that comes with the modem as far as possible (the one that recognizes the modem but limits the username length) then navigate to the router in a browser (192.168.1.1) and go to management - backup and backup your settings.

You may need to restore default settings before you do this as the wizard may have been run before and have incorrect info in the conf file. Then you can manually edit the saved conf file to put your whole username in.

Following this you go to management and update the settings from the edited saved conf file.

Anyway I assume you got it sorted already but for anyone else who has this problem I'll post this reply.
