ADSL versus Wi-Fi

You playing online with this connection? Is the latencies good enough for that?
Online games? No I play offline cause online means you actually spent money on legal games ;) I have played BZflag over it and the lag was very low (much lower than on 3G).
Just shows that it usually is you get what you pay for..
Thats pretty much how I feel about them. Sure it is expencive to pay R89 for a GB but you don't get it much cheaper elsewhere in SA. Plus their 2mbps is really 2mbps as you can download at speeds of up to 290kb/s

Hello RPM

How did you come up with this?
Telkom ADSL 384Kbps 1GB R323.00

If I have a look at Axxess then I get this:
Axxess 384Kbps ADSL Line rental = R139.00
Axxess 3GB ADSL Account = R59.00
Total monthly is = R198.00

and

Telkom ADSL 512Kbps 3GB R660.00

If I have a look at Axxess then I get this:
Axxess 512Kbps ADSL Line rental = R289.00
Axxess 3GB ADSL Account = R179.00
Total monthly is = R468.00

Am I missing something?

Hi Mozy

Think your missing the Telephone line rental portion paybale to Telkom which is not included in the ADSL Line rental. Not sure what the exact cost is but guess it is somewhere between R120 and R150?

Regards

Hmm...i think they were talking only about Telkom as your ISP.

If i look at WebAfrica's prices:

384k Line
3GB TRaffic

R340 per month

or

512K line
3GB Traffic

R479 per month

I don' think they did their research on this topic properly...

Nope...he did...you rent the line from Axxess not telkom.
I think he thinks it's a 1GB cap.
There's no way Axxess gives you 3GB for R59...

also exclude the Telkom Telephone line rental portion?

Telkoms prices aint half bad, considering their product quality is over 100% better than all the WIFI products out there.

adsl is more stable than wireless, going to get WiMax installation done soon....lack of lines in my area.

All adsl gamers ive met online had worse ping than I had using wireless..

Adsl is really slow internationally..

Wrong, my wiresless connection has not been out once since I got it more than a year ago. We have two ADSL lines at work and they have been down a few times.

you lease the ADSL portion from you ISP (Axxes, webafrica, cybersmart etc.) But you still need to pay for the telephone line portion form Telkom

DSL Line

This service allows clients to order a Telkom ADSL line through Web Africa. Clients will benefit from the simplicity of being able to pay for both their bandwidth and ADSL line rental through a single point of contact.

To utilise our ADSL Line offerings, you require:

* A Telkom telephone line

wireless never going down

I have yet to see a wireless operator maintaining more than 90 days constant connection to a customer sites need regular maintenance and upgrade's equipment is of a lower quality standard than that of the commercial partners 90% of technician have no RF training enclosures are normally fiberglass/plastic housings sometimes with the equipment just put in the box and not mounted , that is why the 2.4 and 5.8 distribution is so temperamental if it was installed to a professional standard there would be less issues with customers but its about money and not the customer

Nope - never did that, but I did see a few telephone poles getting blown over.

I don't get it. Reading this thread, it seems that wifi is better than telkom adsl, the speeds, connection uptime and international latencies and it is cheaper, why then is everyone going for adsl?

not in my experience, probably depends on whether your lucky enough to find a good wifi provider and don't end up with a useless one (the majority are useless)

Thats cause everyone is looking for some excuse to express their fanboism with Telkom. Most of them are just too afriad to come out of the [-]closet[/-] copper and say "I love Telkom". You can easily see how exicited they get each month when Telkom, their sweetheart, sends them the bill for their ADSL connection.

At night they dream about the superior power Telkom gives them and in their dream they never have to move out of their moms basement so they really have no problem with the fact that ADSL is a fixed provider.

wow, that is a solid explanation....

All i can say is that all that wireless internet has giving me is a hel of a lot of headaches (refer to my earlier post) and therefore i am staying clear of them unless someone with a proven track record starts offering a reasonable service in my area.....

Oh yeah - I forgot to mention this one you just wrote - that is a very typical "I love Telkom" declaration in disguise right there :p
