Hi

I checked out someone's adsl line on saturday.

She had a 4mbit line installed and in the entire day I spent there, the highest speed i ever saw was 40KB Per second.

Most of the time speeds varied between 8KB-14KB per second..


What is the known upload speeds of adsl, how much up/down line speed is nessicary for making voip calls ?

I would suggest your friend call Telkom and have her line problem looked at.
 
That sound more like a 384 connection, suggest she calls Telkom 0800 375 375. Skype should work on a 384 as well, unless there is a fault.
 
with a 4mbps ADSL line you usually get 512kbps upload speed, meaning you should be able to download at ~ 450kB/s and upload at ~ 50kB/s.

Certain ADSL routers/modems would show you the current configured download & upload bitrates or even the attainable download & upload rates. The attainable rates should be higher than the configured rates of course.
 
Service provider apparently also makes a big difference. I get much better speeds from Axxess and Web Africa than I do from Telkom. Tomorrow I am cancelling my Telkom account.
