Hi there,
I have a Telkom ADSL as well as their Dobroadband 2 GB capped package which incl. the landline rent amounts to R407 per month.
I saw an add for a local isp in the area (Strand Gordonsbay) called RS unwired. they advertise uncapped wireless internet for for the following rates:

ü 256K / 512K (R250 /R350)
ü Uncapped
ü Peer 2 Peer
ü E-mail address
ü Forwarding of old e-mail to new e-mail
ü Month to Month
ü 50% of original purchase price Buy-Back of equipment installed (R1200 for modem and installation needed)
ü 24 hrs Support
ü 1 hour free on-site help per month

I also queried about 'thresholds' and they said there is no threshold as long as i don't download like 8 stuff together.
So all in all it will cost R350 per month for a uncapped 512K line.

Does this sound to good to be true? or where is the catch. I don't want to cancel my adsl if this is not going to be a better move.
- please keep terminology on dummy level as I'm no IT boffen.

many thanks!!!

Can you provide a URL for this advert? Does this company have a website? If not then I wouldn't trust them.

I'd recommend you stick with Telkom. Rather the devil that you know, then the one that you don't.

No company can offer uncapped internet for that price. Let alone with no thresholds.

yeah definitely to good to be true, they don't even have a website.
Would like to know how their office looks like, if they even have one!

Its an advert not even worth commenting about.
99% uptime on a wireless network for R300 odd rand uncapped.... on planet uranus maybe

I wouldn't give them my money.

Maybe PM me for help and advice as to who provides good speeds, who's service currently sucks, who provides decent client service and which networks are for sale.

Some points to consider :

Their website http://www.rsunwired.co.za/ says it all
are they ICASA Licensed or not ??
1 hour onsite support free per month are they mad ??
Whats there contact numbers ??

Uncapped - at what contention ratio and where they getting their bandwidth from ??

There is too many unknowns here.

I'll second all of that, but also add that the site seems to have changed since you were there Warwick, now it says "under construction" with an "021-856" phone number. That's somewhere around Broadlands Industrial / Gordon's Bay area is it not?

Hey, maybe Omnicon finally managed to sell that tower of theirs up on Sir Lowry's Pass that's affected by the 400KV lines. They offered it to me last year for R5K. I thought it was too good to be true so I went to look. Only once I got there and saw what was running a couple of meters away did I understand why they'd decided to abandon it.

There are good wireless providers in the Helderberg area, just ask around and do some solid research.

Remember selling an uncapped product, may sound great, however its not a sustainable product in South Africa, so what real service level are you going to get from it for that price.

Here's a list of some of the providers in the area, in alphabetical order :

Cape Connect
GBay
GB Security
Helderberg Wireless
Snowball
Wireless Online

I'm in the industry and I've worked with some of these ISP's, and I know that an uncapped WISP model will not work. For the simple reason good quality bandwidth in South Africa costs good money.

Thanks for all the replies!
Here is contact details for the sales reps:

Jaco – 072-596-8646

Dormé – 076 952-1314

I spoke to a Wicus which was very kind and helpful. They are situated in G-bay like someone was wondering.

Please update me if you find this to be a good deal - won't someone clued up plz phone them with some tech questions??

THNX !!:)

Elize,

Rather than have us repeatedly waste the sales reps precious time asking them questions, why don't you rather ask them to join up here and introduce themselves in this thread so we can ask them simple questions such as how many high sites they have, who their bandwidth provider is, what their contention ratios are and maybe even what type of bandwidth they are attempting to sell to the public?
