Why dont ISP's build their own network to the users homes?

We need to compare with how the billing works in other countries. Hopefully this may provide some indication as to what we in SA should be paying for the copper rental component of an ADSL bill.
Understandably there are costs involved with maintaining the copper, but are we being charged a fee which is in sync with those costs ( plus a FAIR markup) ? Something tells me not - it's more likely a case of profiteering due to lack of competition. If Telkom insist on charging DSL customers with no analogue phone service for the copper leads, it should be a small fee for maintenance & administration, rather than the full phone line rental charge currently being levied.
Telkom, it's time to come clean!

nictron, ICASA (should rather be called DCASA) is a govirmint organization, that gets funded by the govirmint and....this is the real "biggie".....the govirmint is Telkom's biggest shareholder!

Now why would any DCASA member jeopardize his/her cozy job and tell the govirmint that they suck and are stealing from the people? It just doesn't make sense.

ICASA and DOC ain't interested in MyBB. As for Telkom, we had a rep, ran away, could not handle us!

The cost of ripping up roads, labour and building material is kinda heavy for ISP's! maybe the top 3 ISP's might do this, but even then, its still VERY expensive!

Can't you drop the voice part of the copper line rental. I can remember someone mentioning it? It was about a R50 saving.

I think the reason the whole line rental thing started was because Telkom was making tons of money out of dial-up internet because we had to pay for how ever long we dialed in, they saw it as a threat to that revenue. In other countries like the US dial up used to be a free call (free local calls), so the switch over to ADSL was not such a big threat to the phone companies and they whole heartedly embraced the new paradigm and made the most out of it. I suspect that we are STILL paying to this day for Telkom being scared of losing all that dial up revenue.

As an example of these ridiculous Telkom costs: I asked for an indoor extension of my phone line but the technician could not install it through the supplied wall cabling that would have ran the cable neatly from the lounge to the study via the ceiling. So instead he pasted it along the outside of the wall with... silicon! .. which soon came loose with the cable dangling about. Now, ladies and gentleman, for THAT pathetic cable running through my house along the outside walls with badly patched silicone I have to pay R11 PER MONTH. Times that over the 7 years that I've had it I have to pay more than R900 for that pathetic cable and there is no way I can stop it or discontinue it without risking cancelling my whole line with them and then waiting another 6 months to reconnect it..... How crazy is that?!
