Advanced Driving Course - who's done one?

Read earlier - it depends on your insurance company. My broker says mine does, he said the certificate of attendance doesn't mean much - but if I pass the test that the course offers, and I get a certificate of competency, I can expect about 15% off my premium, so its a saving of over R100 a month :)

You have to redo the test every two years though, to keep the certificate.

I'm assuming brokerless el-cheap-o insurance companies like Outsurance, Dial-Direct, Budget, etc, wouldn't care less. I've been with these companies, and each one has screwed me over.
 
Eina! so how many butt-h-0-0-0-0-0-0-es do you have? seriously though, I am still with outsurance and remember them asking me if I have adv driving cert back in 2006 when i applied. A cash outlow of R3500 upfront resulting in cash savings of R100pm, say over the next 40 years is an excellent investment.

Iv'e done A few driving courses a few times

Volkswagen and Bmw's were the best so far.

I would like to do a 5 day Advance driving course in Switzerland with Audi's new 2.0TT's. I thinks its around 20k or so..
The best experiences I had with the courses were, when to handle your vehicle. at what types of speed etc. etc. And to be more alert on road way's.

LOL - yeh, the all screwed me with small claims... Dial Direct being the worse, it took over a year to get R12,000 damage repaired properly, I had to get the ombudsman involved to do it properly, and that took six months alone.

Dial Direct and Budget seem to have an interesting thing going, they operate out of the same call center, so every year when they bump up your premium on a devalueing car, you phone and complain, you might cancel, and then suddenly you get a cheaper option from Budget - you loose your no-claim-bonus, etc., then at the end of the year, same happens again, and suddenly you get a cheaper option from Dial Direct.

I actually had the guy screw up the one year, while canceling with Budget, he asked why, and I said because I can get a cheaper premium from Dial Direct - he said oh, ok, he'll do the cancellation, and then do the sign up with Dial Direct, no more trying to persuading me to stay with Budget.... obviously the commission with keeping someone at one insurance company, isn't as much as signing them up with another insurance company.

Thats all good and well, but I don't really see the point in doing it in any other car besides your own, besides the fun factor :D. Its pointless learning how to handle a all-wheel drive car, when you drive a rear wheel drive, or learning to drive a rear wheel drive, when you drive a front wheel drive - they all handle differently in various conditions.

Although at the end of the day you have a lot more experience when it come to handling any type of car. Which IMO is the best exp one should appreciate.

I think budget, dial direct, first for women and auto and general all fal under the same "broker call centre" called telesure, so they couldn't care less.

Its a pity these courses are so expensive. How much does it cost to renew it every 2 years?

20k for an Audi course in germany!! If I had that much cash to blow I would rather go and go on a flip in a jet or something.

But you have to redo the test every 2 years.
 
R399 is cheap for Xrapidx plus he can show off his skillz ub his s2k every 2 years.

After Thursday - my skills suck :p

R399 every two years isn't bad :)

Even at R3,500 - the life saving skills you learn is well worth it - would you say you, or your families life is worth less than R3,500? I still haven't completed the course yet, so I'll post back which sections are worth doing.

I know it sounds a lot. But its for 5 day's... 2 meals included and you get to drive on the ice slopes and caps at high speeds etc.etc Which can be really fun!

Not sure though, I know modern cars have the latest and greatest technology to make you drive like a pro. Refer back to Clarkson's comment on the GT-R. Was in town last year and saw a mini taxi rolled on its side from top of a hill (small incline) all the way from the top to bottom and crashed into stationery vehicles waiting at the red light. If those adv driving certificate can grant me Force push to repel oncoming taxis and trucks then yeah I say its worth getting for life saving skills, otherwise i would get it just for the sake of insurance savings.

Do the driving course first and then tell us how little did you know about your driving skills, in a fancy high technology car or not. :)

Take taxi's out of it - do you really think you're a better driver than the guy sitting next to you in a 88 Jetta with your ABS, EBD, ESD, ASC, etc? Wanna put you're life on it? I would've before the 14th of April... ask anyone who's met me, I'm pretty arrogant (polite term) - and I'm pretty humble now... try the course, then come back and tell us how you kicked everyone's ass.

Get a superbike.

You will learn defensive driving pretty quickly ;)
But I agree fully, everyone needs to have these courses done before going for a license. The problem is however that we will not have anyone to drive taxis then :D

I did 3 in total, advanced for the car, 4x4 and Bike. Have all 3 certificates nicely framed :p This is only the basic courses though you get various forms of advanced courses.
 
Yeh - I was supposed to do another leg today, but my clutch packed up - so I'm now clutch shopping - I'll only be continuing the course in June now :( Cheapest clutch kit I can find for S2000 is above R10,000. There goes next months spending.

I have enquired about performance driving courses as well, I think that'll be loads of fun.

You sure spend a lot of money fixing that S2000.
Maybe you should've just bought a new one.

This is the first maintenance related thing I'll be spending money on.... so, so far, so good... Everything else has either been upgrades, or damn accident damage (tyres and front bumper) - so if I bought a new one, it would've cost the same :)
