This past weekend I was driving on the highway for around 40km up until I took a off ramp and came to a stop at a intersection my car a 2014 ford figo 1.4 suddenly died. I caught a glimpse of the oil light quickly switching on and off before the engine shut off sounding like a cold diesel engine, there after the radiator fan came on at full speed for 10 min. Trying to start it came to no avail as if the battery was almost empty ( guess u could say it was struggling to turn)

After a quick inspection i saw the water reservoir was completely bone dry.

Called a tow truck and got it dropped of at my place. 2 days later I filled it back up with water when i saw the water running out from the bottom of the radiator quite quickly. Tried starting the car but no crank at all, ive previously had problems with the battery and suspect it might be dead however I wont be surprised if the engine siezed.

I would appreciate any opinions on how bad the damage could be? I understand i would need a mechanic to take a look at it however i do not want to spend unnecessarily if it wont be worth it.

I want to add that the oil has no metallic or milky white look to it.

not a car mechanic, but if you can borrow one of those computer readers, you might get some tips for the right direction. If the can tripped some sensors, you should see it.

I see they are not that expensive anymore, but I have no idea which ones are good for Ford

Sounds like your radiator is damaged.

I would try turn the engine over by hand, and also dump the oil.

If that is fine then test the battery, charge it, and try start the car.

If it starts get the radiator fixed.

It seems pretty obvious that if water is coming out of the bottom of radiator that’s your problem right there.

Stop trying to start it while knowing the radiator is leaking, it will just make the problems worse.

Charge battery - when charged, remove your spark plugs, crank and see if water comes out the plug holes.

Blown head gasket, at the very least.

Most likely is a seized engine.
this, was there oil? did you check it?
does it crank?

probably time for a mechanic to take a look, as it might be something stupid, like what I had, where I thought it was the engine, and it turned out to be the ECU, and it was cranking, but no spark was getting to it, so it wouldn't run,

turned into one hell of a story trying to figure out where the problem is, especially on these fuel injector cars.
might be a loose ground somewhere deep inside the engine, or some wiring fault that nobody can pinpoint, or in my case as I suspect,

leaving the Key in ON too long and not cranking the engine.

Ford Figo doesnt have a temp gauge. it has a light that goes on and usually by that time, its too late.
Same with my Duster, I got one of these that can give you a heads-up if the temp goes over a certain threshold, amongst other things.

Sorry OP, very likely your engine is seized :(

I ordered one from takealot mainly for fuel econ meter but the Figo ecu doesnt have it programed so it doesnt work so i sent it back.

But yea this is actually a good thing to have, i have an elm bluetooth obd adapter but it doesnt work on my figo as its a diesel. Maybe i will look into one of these again, just for peace of mind.

Dude you have a diesel Figo, you don't need fuel economy figures that thing can run on the smell of an oily rag

How is your diesel Figo treating you? Looks like it never caught on with consumers which is odd.

LOL yea i wanted to try hypermiling techniques and see how much better i could get it, my best tank average was 23.9km/l and my average over the last 8 months is 20.1 km/l.

I have a ELM327 and it works on my 320d. Just don't expect them to read all the modules.

I have had it 8 months so far and almost 14000km, when i got it, the EGR valve got blocked and threw a code, the dealer cleaned the EGR valve and cleared the code and since then, no issues. Possibly the best decision ive ever made with a vehicle, the fuel economy is the same as my old Kawa KLR650 single cylinder. Ok its not the fastest car but it has some decent get up and go but loses steam after around 140km/h but it was not bought for its speed. It was bought as a daily commuter sitting in traffic for almost 2 hours a day.

same one i have and its not compatiable with the figo, works on every other car ive tried it except Opel corsa lite but apparently they are finnicky, my dad has a fancy konwei and it also doesnt read the corsa. Reads the Figo though.
