My partner and I plan to move to the cape town city bowl, since I'm new to finding property I've searched gumtree and sites like iol property for a bachelor flat just under R4000pm. I have contacted an agent regarding one property so to apply and pay the fees will be around 10k I think.. but I feel like I may be going about this the wrong way...

So any advice for a noob? what should I look out for etc... since it's my first time moving out. thanks.

Wow things seem to be moving along nicely for you two, congrats

10k sounds a bit high, that obviously includes the deposit of 1 months rent?
2K sounds a bit high for the agents fees, not sure why you have to pay these fees in the first place though

Thanks.. so you remember my earlier posts regarding her? :D yep it's good, explains why I don't post much here I suppose ;)

Yeah rent and deposit(8k), admin of about 1.4k and some other fees that might be added.. so I might need to look elsewhere... also I would prefer parking with the rent rather than extra. but I only plan to move next month so I could skip the rent for now and only pay the deposit?

GF and I share a 50^2m flat in Wembley Square. Rent is damn expensive, but it's a lekker spot, awesome view of the mountain. Had a mate in Perspectives- if you can find one facing the right way, you can do well.

Do you both work in town? Finding the best access route to where you need to be is always a plan. If it's 50/50 that can decide it. The newer buildings are expensive, but the older, crummier, places are not that far behind. Considering most newer ones come with off street parking, one could say they even out.

How much time do you have to find a spot? Book your phoneline and ADSL as soon as you can if you're that way inclined ;)

Yeah, it says Floor Area: 70m2, must be including the pool.

It is fully furnished, so it explains the high rental.

I'd never live in the City bowl though.

I loved living in the City Bowl - no traffic, you can walk everywhere...

No traffic????

Where in the city bowl do you find no traffic!?

We moved our offices out the city centre to Paarden Eiland a few months back, and my only gripe is the (ever-under-construction) Koeberg Interchange. Still beats CBD traffic and parking though...

You might find that the best deals on bachelor size places will be in granny flats - if you want something for r4k around City Bowl area at least.

The roof of the building has the pool, gym and sauna. It's really awesome to go swimming up there with a view of everything. But yes, it's not massive otherwise, but off street parking etc. and the whole setup is pretty cool. I'd dig to live there if I went back to CT.

Living in City Bowl was indeed awesome!

I wish people here in JHB would develop a culture of walking more. We live in Sandton Central and even though the roads are busy, there is enough space (pavement wise, etc) to walk.

Stayed in Mutual Heights - off Darling Street - worked at the bottom of Adderley - the only time I needed my car was to fetch the ex in Hout Bay.

the rowdy drunk louts making a racket (may have improved since xrapidx moved out though).

We need a zap smiley :p I hear they now have this problem in West Beach :D

I think that goes hand in hand with not getting stabbed in the face each time you try walking somewhere. :p

City bowl is expensive - I doubt you'll find anything decent for under R5k. And if you want a 2 bed in long str or kloof str you'll easily need to fork out R10k.
If you're willing to go out a bit - you can get a 2bed house in upper Woodstock for +- R4.5k
Gumtree is your best option - just keep your eyes open and you'll find something
