Advice needed regarding HD

Which brings us full circle - the discussion was because projectors seem cheaper - for gaming I reckon you'd be better off Spending R20k on a decent 42" 720p LCD.
Or half that for a decent 720p plasma? Seems like an awful lot of coin to me.

While we are confusing people, I have been told that a Plasma is actually better for gaming and general sport and a LCD is better for movies?

Plasmas have better blacks and are better for fast moving images aka sports (which rawks for us SuperSport viewers :D)..

The gaming issue is a tight one, some LCDs still have banding and ghosting but not too bad. Best thing to do is check out the unit in person before buying it. Simple.

Watch out for cheap projectors that promise big feature, but for close to 20K, you'll get a stunning projector.

Now I know where my Vodacom phonebill money went :p

Are 1080p LCDs still way up in the stratosphere in terms of price?

The LG and Samsung 1080p 42" LCD's are going for about R23,000 - R25,000. With a whopping 15,000:1 contrast ratio (the Samsung)

I think it's cause they usually have a better contrast ratio, and faster response times, so you don't get ghosting in fast paced games and sports.

Some of these quoted ratios are "dynamic" ratios and rely on internal software to change the contrast on screen on the fly according to what's on the screen so I'd take these figures with a pinch of salt. No denying they still look great though..

Thanks Bwana but I know where Google is. I want to hear the opinions of people I trust ;)

This is a thread asking about high definition so it's not really hijacking yet

Before you disregard out of hand the results were of a forum search and many of the posts from people you trust.

Well I haven't been involved in the LCD/Plasma debate for a while now since it's the same ol' **** rehashed in a new form.

A pro (advantage) of LCDs that hasn't been mentioned yet is that the high native res means it can double up as a screen for the PC (if only I had the cash for a Westy 37"er).
I haven't seen a plasma as a computer screen so I can't say anything about the quality there.

Also uses less power.

Its not that bad now that you bring it up. Wouldnt want to use it full time as the max resolution on my plasma is only 1280x720 (42") but in a pinch it gets the job done.

Plasmas, in general: higher contrast ratio - lower resolution - faster response

LCD's, in general: lower contrast ratio - higher resolution - slower response

So, in general, plasmas for movies (where you have a low resolution source but with rich colours) , LCD's for games (where you have high res and computer generated colours).

Oh I am sooo happy with my cheapo 32" Mecer LCD... gives me time to enjoy HD while saving up for a proper LCD in 2008. :p

Ding ding ding, until plasmas can match the sharpness of LCDs for people to buy them for dual use i.e. consoles and PC a large segment of the market is gonna shy away from plasmas.

Hey isn't this supposed to be a thread about projectors?:p
