Advice on first car

I would go for the fiesta but it would purely be dependant on your budget. How long you planning on keeping the car?

Personally if the car is not at least a R15k saving, I wouldn't consider buying a car in JHB and driving the car to CPT considering you'll probably spend about R5k+ to get here and back. i.e Flight tickets for 2, accommodation probably for at least a night, and petrol and toll fees when driving. And I think car services charge about the same.

It's lots of effort if there is no real saving.

But If it is a good deal, I would prefer to test drive it before you put pen to paper. So fly up to check it in person would be better.

You'd obviously need insurance if the vehicle is being financed but you can always do some shopping around for better insurance quotes after you get the vehicle.

I have helped 2 cousins of mine look for cars in the last 3 months. From that experience, I can tell you it will be hard to find a 2017/2018 Vivo or Fiesta with “low mileage” at your price point. My guess is that the cars you are seeing in Gauteng at those prices are being sold by dodgy dealers and the cars have questionable history at best. If possible, I would say try add R30k to your budget and find yourself a brand new Suzuki Swift GA. You get yourself a brand new car with 5 year warranty and 2 year service plan.
Those do look like a good option, and they weren't on my radar. I'll take a look at them, thanks.

Go get this for R89k. Ask if the timing/water pump/ service has been done, then take it to DEKRA for a full check. If all looks good, buy it. You won't go wrong with this model of Jazz. I have a similar one that is 10 years old and not a single issue thus far. Smash n Grab tint is 1.8k and a set of new tryes is 3.5k, then you're all set.

the best car in the world... is a car thats paid for
I'll look into this as an option, I'll be able to get it cash if I decide on something like this.

Yea if cash is an option then definitely go that route.

You'll save a ton on insurance as well with a Honda, compared to a VW/Toyota/Ford. Only schelp is you gotta hunt for parts, but if you service it yearly it's not a big prob.

At that price point, the significantly cheaper cars are def at dodgy dealers, been there done that. If you ignore the advice here, take it as school fees. Flipside, you will get to know about car parts and prices intimately.

1. Stick to the major dealers i.e. VW, Ford, Toyota etc. They will sometimes stock another brand in their lot. It will be slightly cheaper than buying it from the brand dealership. But, they do a 80 point check, some do even higher.

2. Financing, you a wet dream to their "Finance Officers", they will say congrats you been approved, and give the highest interest rate and terms, normally from their inhouse finance, which is a middle man to another bank, insist on seeing all quotes from all banks, if they cannot provide it, walk away, you being shafted.

My last car I bought, they insisted that only their inhouse Finance came back with a quote (15% interest rate over 72 months). I eventually told them that I had personally contacted my bank who confirm that they did provide a quote. (9.98% over 60months) This was about R1.5k saving a month for 60, and the full installment saving for 12 months.

3. I have not bought a car in almost 10 years. But, of this happened today, I would find the ombudsman, and lay a complaint via email and copy the dealership, the head office claiming neglicence/funny business as they cannot do something as simple as getting quotes from banks.

Hi. What car did you eventually settle for? If you have bought it, then tell us what make and model, and how has your driving experience been thus far? for those who may be accessing this thread in the future, it would be good to have your feedback if they are ever in the same situation that you have been in!

A well looked after heavy mileage Golf V GTI is always a winner if you need a car in the low to mid 100K area.

Dont buy a ford, coming from a ford owner!

Buy right the first time, buy a toyota.
My parents had a Ford Figo. 6 years later i sold it and the only thing it never needed was a new battery during lockdown.

That car was bulletproof.

PS - Granted, it was very low mileage if that counts for anything.
