Good day, I would appreciate those more in the know than myself on which of the following would be the better choice.

1) 2017 RAV4 2.0 GX (automatic) (Mark II) - 17261 km
2) 2016 Tiguan II 2.0 TDi BlueMotion Trend and Fun - 87025 km

Both advertised for basically the same price at 290k.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Quality-wise, the Tiguan is miles ahead of the Rav4.

That being said, for the same price, you're getting a newer SUV which has barely been run in. Also, the Rav4 is petrol, which will cost you less in maintenance in the long run.

Drive both, and see which one you like the most, but emotions aside, the Rav4 would be the better buy.

Just make sure the Rav4 is not an ex rental car. There are lots of 2L auto's for sale that were ex rental

We've had an ex rental for a little over a year now in our household and haven't had any issues.

Don't think you can go wrong with an ex rental auto.

I had a Kia Sportage, 2012 ex-rental (Europecar, I think) that I bought with 70k on the clock. Never had a days worth of trouble with it in the 4 years I had it.

I can understand why people are careful when it comes to ex-rentals but I don't think they are nearly as bad as they are made out to be.

The rental thing is getting rather old, I don't know where it comes from and how it came about but it just sounds silly.
In the old days, before the massive deposits you could lose, people used to really drive rentals as if they were 4x4, sports cars and and.

The Tiguan a much nicer place to be, but comparitively with the mileage, the RAV 4 more a choice for the head.

A nice option with VW, is you can extend the motorplan by 2 years and +30 000 for a very reasonable amount, i did it with my gti.

From the above 2 options given I would go for Rav4. The mileage on that Tiguan is too high for me.

Also, the Rav4 is petrol, which will cost you less in maintenance in the long run.
With the fuel price on its way to R18 a liter, petrol driven cars may soon become too expensive to operate. In any case, apart from being more economical, diesel vehicles are more responsive and much more fun to drive.

I would take the Tiguan but part of my reasoning is my love for VAG products and the network I have to avoid dealerships when work needs to be done on one that I own that is out of warranty/service/maintenance plan. A 2016 is not a MkII Tiguan though, it is still a MkI but merely the facelift still based on the PQ46 platform with the MkII based on the MQB platform.

Also, the Rav4 is petrol, which will cost you less in maintenance in the long run.

Why do you say this?

eish, do some research...

Speak to any mech/workshop and they will tell you that the cost of maintaining a diesel is higher over the lifetime of the vehicle: more frequent services, and more to go wrong due to the crap diesel in ZA.

on top of this, diesel vehicles are far worse polluters than petrol ones, which is why the EU is working towards restricting/banning them

lol, what?

boet, I drive a supercharged v8 - no diesel comes close to the fun factor of that beast, and I've owned quite a few diesel cars.
