Advice on SUV choice

With the fuel price on its way to R18 a liter, petrol driven cars may soon become too expensive to operate. In any case, apart from being more economical, diesel vehicles are more responsive and much more fun to drive.

Last I checked the price of diesel wasn’t really far behind and at certain points even more than petrol.

lol, what?

boet, I drive a supercharged v8 - no diesel comes close to the fun factor of that beast, and I've owned quite a few diesel cars.

I would assume he means like for like engine and cylinder capacities.

In which case the higher torque at lower revs can translate to more responsive for similar money.

Very often a diesel gives you a better driving experience in heavier vehicles. its a tough call because small capasity turbo petrols have very good torque delivery, like the Tiguan 1.4 Tsi. I personally am not a fan of the typical diesel torque curve/rev style. but it is a personal thing.

Also, you REALLY cant compare your supercharged V8 in this thread, not relevant at all!

It is not about the price of diesel, its about the fact that you use so much less of it. My medium sized diesel SUV uses less than 5 l/100km on the open road provided I stay within the speed limit and less than 6 l/100 km in combined highway and city driving.

Yeah but there are cars that do similar or very near similar often for much less money at purchase time which negates the fuel bill overall.

People tend not to do a calculation of their total cost of fuel over say 5 years and correlate it to the purchase price.

Quite often (not always) the petrol version is cheaper when total cost is considered over five years.

eish, do some research...

Speak to any mech/workshop and they will tell you that the cost of maintaining a diesel is higher over the lifetime of the vehicle: more frequent services, and more to go wrong due to the crap diesel in ZA.

on top of this, diesel vehicles are far worse polluters than petrol ones, which is why the EU is working towards restricting/banning them

Why? You made the statement, I merely asked why you made the statement and you haven't given much to back it up.

I have owned a diesel in the past, my girlfriends current car is a diesel and I have owned petrol cars and the diesels haven't cost any more or less than the petrols I have owned. This is my personal experience though and the cars I have owned aren't 100% comparable to each other. Even with our crap local diesel, I don't see why a diesel costs any more or less to maintain than an equivalent petrol.
