Advice on teacher's conduct

Dear OP

Your child is not the little angel you believe him/her to be. You should thank the teacher for giving a damn.

(Also my mom's a school teacher 32 years in the making and tells me each day how undisciplined kids are and their parents think their little bundles of joy can do nothing wrong)

People leave their young impressionable kids (the stage in their lives where they learn to respect others, have manners and some sort of discipline) yet, the teachers can't DO anything if a child is naughty at all? A smack on the hand or pepper in the mouth is the LEAST they could do other than to give your kid (and other misbehaving brats) a hiding. It also doesn't help that the parents MIGHT discipline their child LATER, because the kid won't know why you're yelling at him for when, what he did, was several hours ago. Hell, scare tactics works like a charm... your kid isn't harmed in anyway, so why not allow them to scare them with a wooden spoon when naughty?

It's really up to you to give clear instructions to the Teacher to what is allowed and what is not allowed as a form of punishment when you're not around. You might as well just put your kid in front of the TV and leave for a day's work and *hope* he's okay / learn's from the TV what he needs to, because I understand parents can't always be with their kids. But it's the parent's responsibility to at least give the necessary tools/measures to the teacher to ensure their kids don't grow up to be disrespectful naughty *******s.
My son is also 3 now and if he is abnormally naughty at home or at the creche, he knows the "naughty spoon" comes out. He has never gotten a hiding with it but the threat is enough to keep him in check.

The first and only time he swore at me he got a dab of pepper in his mouth, he has never sworn at me again. It may sound cruel to all the new age parents who believe that making a child sit in a corner for 5 minutes will make him behave but guess what, we have tried it before and it does not work.

Kids need discipline or else they will grow up to be like the spineless disrespectful teens we have today that are hiding behind mommy, daddy and the courts instead of taking the responsibility for their mistakes.. I grew up respecting other people and thinking twice about my actions because I knew there was a world of hurt waiting for me if my Dad found out what I did. I still love and respect my parents as much as I have always done even after countless hidings because none of them were undeserved.

I want my son to also grow up the same way with the same values.

I agree with what you say.

The problem i have is solely with the smack the child received which is not suppose to be that big a deal.

Of course I don't condone giving corporal punishent to a child that young. It's just some parents' attitude of "you don't touch my child even with a feather" that I have a problem with.

I would love to know whether you have any kids of your own?

I don't know about other kids but with my 18 month old making him look me in the eye and telling him loudly and in an angry tone of voice "No! YOU ARE A BAD BOY!" then ignoring and withholding affection from him for a few minutes is enough to make him burst into tears, crap himself and not repeat the behaviour.

The moment this stops working or it looks like he is starting to manipulate me I'll start giving smacks.

No I don't.

But I have never said that somebody else's child needs to be beaten hard. I've been working with children for 5 years and I've never lifted a finger towards a child (except for pulling a 14yo gangster by the ear to the principal's office in 2007). What I am against is this over-sensitivity of parents.

Also the pepper thing won't work because my little boy loves two minute noodles with Bushman's Smoked Jalepeno sauce and fetta.

Soap works better than pepper. + it's "I'll wash your mouth out with soap" gets the message across.

You know i find the pepper thing pretty dodgy. Especially since they did it without any permission. What if he had an allergy? What if he totally overreacted to it? I wouldn't be happy about that.

You will understand one day. You will do everything in your power to protect your child & believe me as a parent you do tend to overreact a little bit. You'll see, the day your child is born you carry your heart outside your body.

I'll raise my children exactly like my parents raised me and how my rest of my family is raising their own kids. I have a big family with many kids that are turning out to be peer-leading.

MM I'm not sure about that. We allow members of the family to smack our 19 month old with some discretion. It's quite personal.

I'd say that what you allow family to do to your kids is different to what you allow strangers (Which is pretty much what teachers are.) to do.

Also each kid is different. Some don't need to be smacked some do.

See but you ALLOW them. You gave them permission to discipline your child within certain boundaries - this teacher did not have the required permission. You know what is so contradictory... fighting violence with violence: 1 bite = 1 slap on the hand. How is this constructive discipline?

Biting children is a deadly threat to other kids in the same school. Was i the teacher, i would immediatly suspend that kid and ask the victim's parents to demand an aids test of the offending child. You might think i overreact but......

Then again, i come form an era where the teachers were told not to spare the rod by my parents.

But did you read that the other kid that bit him only got send to the naughty corner? But the OP's kid got slapped? How is that fair?

just my 2 cents worth again. you should use a wooden spoon as your hand a child associates with caring a loving and not as something that smacks around. if you know what i'm getting at. you feed your child with your hands, love him, touch him - and now all of a sudden the same hand smacks him?
a wooden spoon doesn't necessarily need to leave marks it just needs a small smack and he will know not to do the wrong again.

Bwahahaha. Really. I've been given a hiding with anything from a wooden spoon used to make my loving mother's soups and stews, from the shoes I wore on my first day to school and the sandals I wore went I went to visit a friend at his house for the first time in my life, and those things never got evil meanings to me. Children are being wrapped up in cotton and get away with everything. I can honestly say I do NOT want to be a teacher or caregiver of any kind, because you cannot discipline children anymore. :(

Its an old debate. These days, lead by the our friends with the starry flag, any physical punishment on your child is deemed abuse. Yet an entire generation grew up with physical reproof and it doesnt take a rocket scientists to compare which generation fared better.

The problem is, some people abused the ability to discipline their children, and took it too far. So humans have centralized the thresholds of child discipline to the N's degree to protect from that. But also have left the door open for children who are merely disciplined by words, not action.

And lets face it, how many adults on this forum can say they dont remember what they got their biggest hidings for? And did they do it again? Are they worse off now?

To answer the original question posed - the only thing i agree with is that the punishment given was not equal . Smack both kids, or shout at both kids. But dont differentiate punishment in front of them because in their little minds it breeds superiority complexes.
